Rostock Max and the Kossel Pro

Post by Max3D »

Hi guys,

I'm a new member that has been viewing this forum in preparation for my first 3d printer purchase (I was first introduced to 3D printing back in 2007 working with some ZPrinter 310 plaster printers). I was on the fence between the Rostock Max and (while waiting for) Openbeam's Kossel Pro and have made a final decision based upon Openbeam's announcing limited preorders for their Kossel today. I have to say that I came to my decision rather easily after taking a look at what's being offered by Openbeam, images of the Kossel Pro as well as its 250x250mm build volume (auto leveling is nice, but... I still check the gap on new spark plugs - a bit of a perfectionist).

I am not here to promote or knock the Openbeam design, I just wanted to note that Rostock Max has a considerable amount of refinement over the Kossel Pro and others. The Rostock Max is truly impressive when you consider all the deltabot kits available (Kossel Pro uses the EZStruder). What also impresses me is the dedication of the community in this forum. There is a steady flow of information here with a lot of ideas that inspire different paths of thought. It is interesting that, although the Rostock can be modified and is open to modifications there are not a lot of major design modifications being made. I think it is mainly because the Rostock Max performs very well in its current version (V2) straight out of the box, so to speak.

I think that the Kossel Pro has potential, but whether or not it can evolve as the Rostock Max has will need to be seen. Considering where I started just a few months ago pursuing the goal to become a part of the open source 3D printing community, I think I have settled for what I consider to be the best offering by a far margin. I am happy to say that I will be purchasing a Rostock Max this month. And, I can't wait to build my Rostock Max and get started printing while becoming a more active member of this forum.

Be talk'n to ya soon, and thanks for helping me make my decision...

Welcome onboard.

Download the manual immediately and order the connectors described there in the beginning. They are really cheap items you can get them from dx or banggood.

You will not regret getting the rostock max v2. Also this forum is excellent. Lots of smart people ready to help.

I downloaded the manual some time ago and have been studying it. I will definitely be using the connectors. It will make hotend maintenance easier.

Almost every review I read about the Rostock Max spoke directly about the great community here in this forum. I am definitely happy to be a part of it.

Thanks for the replies.

I have just been through the build process. Feel free to pm me if you are stuck anywhere. Or if youe making an order from DX etc.

There are several things you can do during the build to make it just a little bit nicer.

I ordered the MAX v2 yesterday and looked over the manual. Holy Cow was my first reaction. I wonder why the kit doesn't include all the connectors, etc., and charge an extra 40 clams. What a pain to run around and collect all the things needed to make it a true build kit.

I definitely would like to hear any tips on making the process easier...like maybe the invoice for all the stuff to order. Just ordering this stuff takes a bunch of time I was hping to spend on other things.

Looking forward to printing--but probably will build a box/shield first. I will only be printing ABS (need the strength and outdoor use compatibility).

Thanx in advance!
scooter it.

Those are just a list of common mods. Really, I think the only thing that you absolutely need that's not in the kit is the silicone for the hot-end.

It really is a complete kit, sans a $5 tube of glue that doesn't make sense to buy, sell, ship, etc when it's relatively available and many people probably own already anyway.

I'm taking the dive and going through the buying process at this moment. I'm fussing over the color right now. I'm looking at what others have done. One foot in the forum and the other in the store.

There are the important extras you can do to make future mods easier, especially with the E3D v6 mod I plan on. If there is one thing that could be added to the kit, it would have to be the JST or Molex connectors for the hotend. Not complaining, just suggesting. But, the cost for the Rostock Max just can't be beat right now.

Buying Weller 40w solder station, crimping tool, Kapton tape, thread lock and silicone on amazon at the same time also. Need a new solder station and crimping tool for my new interests in printing multi-rotor frames for the FPV craze. I can understand what GPriv is saying, but that's kind of the standard with buying new equipment in kit form.

I cannot believe how this (revolutionary) simple machine is going to allow me to build things I have been thinking about making most of my life, but unable to because of limited access to a machine shop. For a little over a grand I can make things in my computer room that I would have difficulty making with a CNC. No more PVC pipes and ABS sheets. I can get back into lost wax casting also (jewelry, sculpture, aluminum parts, etc.). My head is spinning... From thought to form in a matter of hours is pretty incredible.

Better start learning to use the quote buttons next time.

I'm going to have to flip a coin on the color...

I am looking at getting the rostock and just discovered the kossel pro. Any comments on either machine? I am a total noob when it comes to 3d printers.
