I just purchased this 1st generation Rostock Max and have some questions.
Got it for $125, which I figured had to be worth it in parts alone.
The lady I got it from said it was her brother's (who moved out of state) and the last time he was printing on it the unit would stop about 50% to 75% before completion.
Upon further inspection it has a lot of exposed wires around the print head. Even a wire that is not attached.
Before I even attempt a print I want to get these wires cleaned up and make sure everything is as it should be.
Looking at my pics, which manual should I download to attempt this?
Also, since I may be tearing this apart, any suggestions on which parts I should purchase and add to the unit during reconstruction?
Or any hints/tips would be appreciated.
Thanks

Wanna double your money?
You're right that you should recon what's there before trying to use it. If you have a short, fuses blow and things break. Make it right before you risk it.
Check out the official build manual and go through the hot-end section to get everything back in order. You can find it on this forum or at github.com/seemecnc
Good luck, and happy printing!

You really scored! I think with a little clean up, and some wiring you can get it ship shape. Get out your multimeter and hook a battery up to some alligator clips to test which wires are running where.

Thanks for the input.
I agree, it was a great deal.
Funny thing is she advertised it for sale at $70 and I thought it was a misprint but it wasn't. The next morning when I was on the way to pick it up she called and said she contacted her brother and the price was incorrect. Of course I cringed as I waited for her to tell me a much larger asking price, but when she said "he actually wanted $125 for it" I smiled and said that I would still take it.
What do you think the best way will be to clean off all the goop on the printhead?
Also, if there are any experienced Rostock Max tinkerers in Arizona that are willing to help me out, I have an i5 Dell laptop I no longer need

Read the manual!!
it looks like you have the tricklaser arms and a tricklaser LED light ring, great purchase!! take the nozzle off the effector (that is the star shaped thing that the arms and hot end are attached to) you can then take off the light ring and unscrew the effector plate halves ang get it apart even more if you want to. if He was printing with ABS acetone will clean it up.
disassemble entire hot end if you can and rebuild it, put a new piece of Bowden in the heat break (that is the PEEK section of the hotend, where the 2 aluminum pieces are scewed to a plastic piece, that plastic piece is made from P.E.E.K.) use the manual as a guide.
nozzles are a bit of a pian to unclog. a set of micro drills off amazon may help. soak them in Acetone for a few hours, dig the crap out, then repeat, if its ABS.
you will want to check the carriages for play, and look at the bearing covers on the cheapskates, see if they need to be replaced.
after everything is replaced you will need to recalibrate it anyway.
Just turning on the printer will tell you how much filament has been thru the machine, if the programming is still intact.
seemecnc has all the parts you need for the V1 and thingiverse has a ton of mods you can print for yourself.
if its too much trouble I will take it off your hands

Although the hotend that came with the machine might be salvageable, it looks really mickey mouse'd together from the picture. Based on that, and the sister's testimony that it shuts down mid-print, chances are extremely good that there's a bare wire causing an intermittent short somewhere. Go over that area with a fine tooth comb, and consider just redoing it with an upgraded hotend from the get-go.
