Reprap Discount GLCD

Post by ZakRabbit »

I'm super newb, and I don't know if this is redundant for everyone here, but if there is someone else that is installing one of these to their Smoothie, I'll leave this here.

First thing I did was match up the adapter panel to the Smoothie, it looked to me like there needed to be some pins soldered to the board. That's exactly what I did, there are 12 that need to be installed; two groups of three and one group of 6. Like I said, I simply matched them up to the "missing" pins from the adapter supplied by robotseed. After they were soldered in, I installed the board with the flat cables installed and found the panel would light up, and the buzzer would sound and nothing else.... Oh, yeah, look up "Panel" on the Smoothieboard.org page and changed my config file exactly as described... tada!! Success! I apologize again if this is pedantic, but if it helps one guy behind me, I'll be happy to hear it.

Yes, I can move the pointer and select the different menu items just fine. Did you install all of the pins?

well i physically installed the two ribbons ext1/2, and i copied and pasted the code snippet from the GLCD wiki into the section ( although it was mostly already there just "#" commented out). can you copy your entire config here so i can do a line by line compare? Thanks

As far as the config goes, I did exactly the same. On my board, I had to solder another 12 pins onto the Smoothieboard itself. Two groups of 3 and one set of six.

mine came pre soldered, ive tried it on 2 glcd boards with no luck so it really looks like a connection issue.

here is the pins

Looks like you're missing the header pins right under the micro-sd card.

I believe that header section is used for the on-board SD-Card on the GLCD.

Which GLCD do you have? The official white one has a SMD POT between the PCB that I had to turn with mini needle nose pliers.

The amazon red clone GLCD I had to solder a resistor in order to get the contrast right.

You'll see the POT and Resistor in this link: http://forum.seemecnc.com/viewtopic.php ... 312#p69532

There is also a contrast setting in the config file. I'm not sure how much control it has as I haven't played with it yet. The writing on mine is quite faint compared to the background, but if I adjust the contrast with the pot, the background only goes darker. I'll do a little fiddling when it's actually all together.

Pretty sure the contrast setting in the configuration file does nothing. I've seen plenty of posts about poor contrast around the place with this setup. It looks like it's pretty random on results. Mine was perfect out of the box....others not so much.
