My first print..

Post by dajay23D »

Hello,

I got my first print after the assembly!! I'm using ABS 1.75 filament from MatterHackers. As expected, it didn't start out all that great. After the assembly, I was itching to print something, even if it was bad, I just wanted to print! I'm using the assembly manual's perimeters for the PEEK fan shroud, only i'm not printing the shroud. I'm printing calibration stuff that I found online. The attached pictures are of a square block. The biggest problem I'm having right now is the FIRST LAYER. It's not sticking. I used Aquanet hairspray. Didn't work for the first layer, but it seemed to stick after the "skirt" or whatever it's doing for a few passes before it finally sticks. Before it sticks, the ABS oozes out and builds up around the nozzle for a few seconds. By that time there's plenty of build up around the nozzle (where the ABS curls around the tip of the nozzle) and there's lift following the layer that sticks(since the plastic is pulled by the nozzle). I let it continue as part of my initial experiment and it gets better and seems to proceed correctly. The pictures are of the results. It's half of the block. I decided to stop it and see how it is since I already knew I needed to fine tune it

On the left corner, you can see the mismatched corners or layers. This happens on the opposing corner as well (if you were to draw a diagonal line). But the other corners are better and don't have that stitch look.

You can see on the bottom is where it printed over the lift and the bad first layer. You'll also see on the above pictures that the white tip sticking out is also the part where I printed over the lift and that piece stuck out.

I'll mess w/ the skirt and the first layer height settings tonight to see if I can get the nozzle to plunge and abs to stick right away. But, the part actually looks decent and the layers stacked up ok...

sorry, i fixed it. It's been awhile. I'm no longer doing first prints...=) Seems like the new MatterSlice fixed those corner issues I was having. Of course, I have other issues now, like retraction...

Overall, those are pretty good looking prints. A couple slicer tweaks and you'll be in business.
