Want to build a or design a small printer

I love my rostock max v2 but it's too big and costs to much to build for a family member. I would prefer to source parts myself even if this is the same or more expensive than a kit. I would love to be able to build a delta and copy the tiko's more inventive aspects and size. I think this would be a fun project that could also turn out to be something i could give to friends and family. A carthusian could be an option as well I just prefer the delta since it's what i know. I'm thinking one of of the problems with a delta might be the hotend taking up most of the build space unless someone helped me design a new one. Any suggestions on current designs or making my own?

I am 99% done with my V3DR printer design and I think it meets all your requirements.

Cost to build should be under $500 complete for PLA-only if you already have a printer to make many of the parts with. Overall dimensions will be 10.5" x 9.2" x 19.7" (without spool) and it has a cylindrical build volume of 6" diameter X 6" high.

That link is quite out of date at this point for details. It is now designed around the E3D V6 Lite hotend. Here is an updated picture I took with my cell phone the other week of my computer screen (ghetto screenshot).

what is the purpose of dual pulley and what looks like a second belt at the bottom?

I like it! That totally would be an awesome start and i like that the top and bottom are printed. Just out of curiosity how come you went with a belt system instead of linear track rails or wire?

RichRap's original 3DR design uses precision rod for linear motion and after pricing the rod/extrusions out through Misumi and the bearings out from Amazon, it ended up costing $50+ to the total build price. As far as belt vs. wire, I like belts better because it is easier to set steps/mm in firmware with a given belt pitch and number of pulley teeth. I do have a secondary tension line design in the works though that will save an additional $10 or so.

Thanks. I am planning on building at least one for my brother-in-law (already have most parts printed) and maybe a second for myself.

There is only one belt in the system. The reason for the additional pulley at the base of the towers is to spread the belt out to be the same width all the way to the top to the idler. I didn't want to induce any error from having the belts run at an angle to meet the idler's diameter since the 20T pulleys are smaller.

There's always the Kossel design, which can easily be scaled up or down as you like. Or search the links and web for many variations on the theme. You can print all the plastic parts rather than buy them.

Yeah ive thought about the kossel but i didnt realize you could scale it down. I live in a small shitty apartment otherwise i would just keep building printers.
