Request recommendation RE: Stepper motor upgrade

Post by cameron98199 »

I have a RM V1 printer and am going through a process of upgrading the machine with V2 parts,
1. New plastic carriages, per V2.
2. Belt replacement after 2 years, (using urethane belts, Mcmaster # 962T80)
3. New delta arms and U-joints, per V2.
4. New fans and fan shrouds, as per the V2 manual.
5. New 0.5mm DIA nozzle. New skinny nozzle tip replaces, old blunt tip (original with V1).
6. EzStruder upgrade (very nice).

My attention now turns to the stepper motors.
1. My stepper motors are original, came with the V1 ordered early 2013(?). Believe they are NEMA 17, but don't know the make - no label or identifying marks. Can anyone help me identify these motors?
2. New to stepper motor technology, but apparently there are several companies that make NEMA motors with different features - "whisper torque", "high accuracy", etc. I would be interested in replacing the motors to lower the noise of the printer, and to reduce vibrations / increase accuracy to increase print quality. Are there any recommended upgrades for the V1 stepper motors?
3. If I decide to select new motors, what are some guidelines I can use in my selection?

Thanks,

Install astrosyn dampers to your motors, I've actually installed mine 3 days ago and it's incredible the noise reduction.
Also, check tricklaser.com, they have some pretty cool stuff.

good luck.

I'd do the trick laser damers instead of the Astros. The Astro dampers definitely make things quiet, but they can also wiggle a little bit and it hurts the placebo accuracy :) of my printer.
