I just finished this 14 hour print. 250mm / 9.8" tall and 178mm / 7" at its girth. .25mm layers printed at 40mm/s in natural PLA. Two perimeters and that's it.

It's a rather stunning piece in person. The PLA almost glows and is translucent. Absolutely no cleanup is required, the layers are all tight and excellent. The positional accuracy of the Rostock MAX over this large of a piece is stunning.

This is the most perfect one of these I've made and MUCH bigger than any other. By way of comparison, here is a 100mm tall version of the same piece next to this monster:

There are other large printers. Hoss on the CNCZone built a 14" cubic Cartesian printer. Most of these are homebrews, I don't know of any commercially available NOW that are this large. A few are in the works.

And sorry to go off topic.... On Kickstarter there's currently a project called Gigabot. It has a 24" x 24" x 24" build area.

Yes, that is why I qualified my reply with the word "NOW" in caps! There are several other Kickstarter and other projects for Rostocks and big printers. Until they actually ship, they are vaporware.

IMO, these big work envelopes are approaching impractical. 14 hours for a print was a LONG time and this was a relatively small print. Perhaps a .7mm nozzle would cut that down some, I'd like to experiment with that. Items that large might be more practical with the larger nozzle.

It really is a thing of beauty. I have another one in black PLA printing now. I'm only using a wall thickness of 2 perimeters on this beast. I'm thinking of trying it with one. Also speeding up to 40mm/s to see how that goes.

Sorry typo - meant I am printing one now at 50mm/s! The original was printed at 40mm/s.

Very nice Mhackney!

I can't believe it took 14hrs at 50 mm/s. Just from experimenting with mine your not really want to go much faster than about 60 mm/s. While the printer itself can handle it no problem. At least with mine the hot end/extruder combo can't. There is too much lag from when the extruder starts till it starts coming out of the hotend. I would get holes in my first perimeter at just about anything above 60, no retracts.

Maybe with 1 perimeter and that Joris(?) option it would be possible to faster.

Actually, this item was printed at 40mm/s. The black one I am printing now is 50mm/s. Each layer is an involute gear profile, so it is quite "long". The fat middle layers in particular take a long time to print each layer. It is amazing to watch the Rostock fly around those gear teeth though! Very impressive.

Not really a lot. After debugging the mechanical issues (Delta arm linkages) It was mostly understanding how a Bowden works to minimize blobbing and stringing. Of course I already had a year of printing under my belt.

Personally......I believe Kisslicer rules at "this" point. It is all evolving so quickly at this point though. However, I did read Kisslicer just introduced a new version......can't wait to play......
