My custom v-slot RepRap 3DR delta printer...the V3DR.

Post by 0110-m-p »

So I figured I would go ahead and post this up here since I am finalizing the development of my design and will start printing parts after the holidays. I originally printed out all the parts for a standard RepRap 3DR printer for my fiancee's brother's birthday so that he could build his first 3D printer and not spend a ton of money doing so. While printing out the parts and building a bill of materials spreadsheet I found that a lot of money could be saved without sacrificing performance if I deviated from the original 3DR design.

Obviously credit should go where credit is due...Richard Horne (RichRap) for his design of the original 3DR from which my design began, Johann Rocholl for his development work on delta printers in general, and of course SeeMeCNC and the members here for getting me into deltas and 3D printing. I will be uploading all STL's, STEP files, and BOM to GitHub whenever everything is complete.

Here is the link to RichRap's blog where he released and outlined his 3DR printer... http://richrap.blogspot.com/2013/07/3dr ... lease.html

So lets start with why I like the 3DR design...

1) Small form factor with a decent print area. The original 3DR is designed around a 170mm build plate (so 160mm diameter build area) and fits inside a of 9.5" x 8.5" square space on your desk. Just to give a sense of scale that means the entire printer will fit on the build platform of the Rostock Max.

2) Design allows for use of tension line or belts/pulleys for carriage movement. The carriages would need redesign to used belts, but the clearances and top and bottom plates are already designed to accept both.

3) Stays true the the RepRap mentality that all parts used for this printer can be printed by this printer. It does require a lot of plastic, but that's okay for a machine in this size class in my opinion.

Now how about the things that I felt could be improved upon and why I decided to go ahead and redesign the entire printer from the ground up.

1) Precision shafting for linear bearings is expensive (the title of the thread pretty much gives away what I'm doing to remedy this). Using v-slot extrusions and mini wheels from OpenBuilds saves just under $70 on the cost of the printer. Changing to this style design does require the printer be a bit larger however.

2) The top spool mount will not accept the standard 8" diameter spools used here in the United States. This one I didn't expect (or think about) with the original 3DR design.

3) Design not modular in terms of electronics. The top mounts are designed specifically to mount the RUMBA controller and hall-effect end stop sensors. I wanted to be able to use mechanical end-stops since they are MUCH cheaper and other controllers...specifically RAMPS 1.4 and the Panucatt Azteeg X5mini. Other devices will also be compatible with provided adapter plates.

4) No provisions for a heated bed. Even though this is meant to be an inexpensive PLA printer, designing in the option to use a heated bed for either better PLA prints or ABS was one of my goals.

5) Many of the STL files for the 3DR have several errors which have caused me slicing problems. They also use an extremely course mesh so round features are very polygonal. This is me being more a perfectionist than anything else, but if I'm doing everything else then I might as well make this more to my liking as well.

6) Lots of other small improvements/changes that I will go into more detail with as I start printing parts and assembling the machine.

Anyway...here are a couple of rendering of the printer as it is right now. Definitely not complete yet, but I was itching to show off the work so far.

Even with the 25mm extensions to the 3 main frame plates, the entire printer still fits inside a 290mm circle (or a 10.5" x 9.2" rectangle if you prefer).

nice work
good choice for wheels those Open Builds dual bearing V wheels work really well.
By the way, the open builds wheels run fine in the groove of plain old "1 x 1" aluminum extrusions like the 8020 brand. You don't need to use the vslot extrusions.
I am not sure, but the 8020 may save you a few bucks vs. vslot?

Actually V-slot is very reasonable. 500mm long pieces are only $5 each for standard or $5.50 for black anodized. Three 500mm lengths are needed for this printer.

So I took a step back on this thing and re-evaluated my design a bit. Originally I wanted to design it so that you could "upgrade" an original 3DR printer to the V3DR design with minimal extra parts. I have ditched this idea since I feel it was a handicap and its better to just start from scratch.

I have the design 90% complete now, with only odds and ends to finish. I start printing parts this weekend and have about half of them finished (all the ones where the design is completely finalized). I'll start posting some pictures up of the build soon.

What an awesome idea! You've addressed most of the gripes that I have with the RichRap design as well. Maybe I'll just print this one and not worry about making my own after all!

What's your current cost estimate? I know on my machine builds, after you've got motors, a controller, a hot-end, LCD screen, an extruder, etc it adds up quickly.

My goal (and I don't consider this a success unless I hit this) is under $500+shipping complete with quality parts. That would include the hotends.com J-head hotend, Kysan stepper motors, Panucatt Azteeg X5mini controller, printed parts (printed yourself...material only), etc etc. Right now, my spreadsheet is showing about $470+shipping but doesn't include any wiring.

Coming very soon....the design is complete and nearly all the parts are here. Just placed the full hardware order from Bolt Depot. Ordered enough hardware for the two machines plus some extra JIC.

Also, figured I'd share the final carriage design. If you look at the original design in the first post, it has changed drastically. I've played with it assembled to a piece of extrusion with a belt and it is working very well so far.

I do have a complete BOM but haven't uploaded it to my GitHub yet. I will be uploading all the BOM, all STL's, and all STEP files once I have verified everything bolts together fine.

As far as electronics goes. I have mounting adapters for RAMPS 1.4, Azteeg X5mini, and AZSMZ Mini. Also have designed LCD enclosures for the tried and true RepRapDiscount LCD2004 and the AZSMZ 12864 GLCD.

For this first machine I am using the AZSMZ Mini with DRV8825 stepper drivers and the AZSMZ 12864 GLCD.

Figured I shared a picture on facebook/instagram, so might as well share it here too.

This is the final carriage and belt clamp design. I'm really happy with how robust and secure the clamp feels.

Slowly but surely, progress continues...only have a tiny bit of building left to do.

- Install carriages
- Install/tension belts
- Finish making arms (one rod end left to install)
- Install arms and effector/hotend
- Install heated bed
- Wiring

I know it can be tiring to change a design once you feel you have something perfect but I'd like to offer you a suggestion for removing part of the model that grips more firmly on the towers and this is why.

After building my Rostock max v2 I wanted to upgrade it right away when I learned about the possibilities.. I had pure hell dismantling the towers in order to fit my wiring for an E3D Kraken but I finally did it. For people that wish to upgrade to multi extruders and have the wiring hidden I had to slip the wiring down the sides of the towers forced down with sliced rubber. I think you might add more value to your unit if you allow any extra wiring to pass through the slot. Overall regardless I like your design so far it's looking good! Just fyi, the rubber sliding in the groove is just a demonstration of just that - it's currently positioned over the groove where the belt would slide - I wouldn't recommend this due to potential resistance of the belt against the rubber.
