my windows 10 debacle

Post by stonewater »

my hp laptop decided to upgrade itself 2 weeks ago from windows 7 pro to windows 10... since that time I had nothing but problems, with simplify, (locking up) and with mattercontrol which would randomly disconnect, not even while printing, but if I was moving things around . if you are within a 30 day window you can roll back to your older o.s. which I did. at that point after everything was restored, the downgrade caused my com ports to be messed up. I had to uninstall arduino re install and then reinstall MC and simplify. things work well now, but for a few hours there it was a PITA so lesson learned do not upgrade to win 10.

yes yes I know a bunch of you are mac and Linux, but hey I am a windoze guy from way back. 386 with a math co processor and 4 megs of ram.... DOS 6.22 and windows 3.1 days. dosshell and all that fun stuff.

I look at it this way. Linux is for servers (it's AWESOME for that!), Windows is for getting work done, and Macs are good for propping open doors. :)

That being said, Microsoft should be ashamed of themselves over the Windows 10 force-feeding they've been doing.

10 actually fixed a lot of issues I was having with 7 on my host machine. Sorry to hear it didn't work out for you.

there is so much variation in hardware that I did not expect it to work well. windows 7 works really well for me. seems they get a good o.s. once every 3 updates. after the first 2 service packs are out and my software vendors catch up I may upgrade. but probably not till I have to. did not go to win7 until I had some 64 bit only software I needed to run which forced a laptop upgrade that came with 7 pro. XP was so dang good I did not want to move.

I have windows 10 on my desktop and laptop (The laptop had 8.1, and was non-touch, so that was my test-bed) 10 works pretty flawlessly here, and because of my hardware mix, I have some spectacular glitches under 7. Then again, I've also been dealing with Win2K (yay for Robot programming software that only works on it), WinXP (The serial equipped laptop for the CNC simulators), Mint Mate, FreeNAS (BSD derived), Manjaro, and a host of other OSes. So far, the OSes I find most fucked up are Ubuntu and Win 8 (although running the Ubuntu box with a CRT screen might have contributed) Surprisingly, I didn't have to re-install the Rambo drivers, nor MC when I upgraded.

And as far as windows versions, I thought it was every other one? Just be glad we don't have a new ME or Microsoft Bob on the horizon (Unless someone decides Bob is perfect for Oculus/Hololens.)

I would highly recomenbd getting a dedicated controller for your printer. IE Octoprint (http://octoprint.org/) and a Raspberry Pi. The main reason for this is that you have much more control over what the server is doing. A PC isn't a bad controller but having something dedicated and designed specifically for the one purpose is a far better thing in my opinion.

Also from a cost perspective. Makes no sense to tie up a $600 piece of equipment when you can run it with a $60 piece.

My two cents.
