Help me name my blog!
Help me name my blog!
I've decided to start a blog on my 3D printing exploits and would like to come up with a good name for it. So I thought I'd ask for suggestions! If you read my posts here (don't fear, I won't slow down here!) I focus on experimentation, measurement and facts to support my assertions. I am also very focused on the aesthetics of 3D printing - something not a lot of people do. I consider it an art form actually. It would be cool to find a name for the blog that conveys the art and science of 3D printing. So that's the challenge - what's a good name?
I have 1000s of posts and articles on forums and blogs all over the place. One thing I'd like to do is start to consolidate links to the most interesting/important of these in one place. So the blog will really be just that - a log of my past and current work. Some of which is complete but a lot of it is still in the ideation phase but I don't have a good place to socialize it yet.
Cheers,
Michael

Re: Help me name my blog!
Reel to Real perhaps? It has many meanings, Reel to reel tapes which used to run many computers (and CNC tools), and sometimes still do, taking something from a reel of filament and turning it into an object, and of course your fly fishing reels.

Re: Help me name my blog!
how about Mhackney's 3D blog? Simple but it gets your name on it which a LOT of people already know.
Re: Help me name my blog!
If you are looking to host it yourself, with a domain name of your choice, I would go by what domain names are available.

Re: Help me name my blog!
I'm thinking about simply hosting at blogspot. I already manage 6 domains so don't need to add more. RichRap's blog is on blogspot and seems to be quite functional. I've used wordpress too.

So then, what are good URLs that are available on the platform of your choice? This will allow you to filter out any names that are already taken.

Well, that's the challenge! Finding a good name/url.

Thew fewer letters in the URL, and the less ambiguous, the better.
MH3D.blogspot.com sounds good. Alas, it's taken. Eaglezsoar's suggestion was good. Use your name recognition. mhackney.blogspot.com ...also taken... hrmm

How about "PrintMaster" or similar.

Re: Help me name my blog!
Well you are one of the "ULTIMATE 3D JEDDI" but that might come across as a touch immodest (though obviously correct)
you could tone it down a notch as "PENULTIMATE 3D JEDDI"
seriously I do understand what you mean about the art of 3D printing and i am reminded of a wonderful coffee table book i received at christmasy man many years ago. called the Art of Engineering drawing and it was full of amazing technical drawings many highlighted with watercolors and mostly dating from the 19th century or the first half of the 20th.
how about "3D-TECH&ART the Extruded way" no thats too long

Re: Help me name my blog!
Well considering you enjoy the artistic side so much, why not shoot for something pseudo high brow? Perhaps "Among Layers"? shortened to MHAL or MHAL3D for "mhackney among layers" or some such jazz.
Perhaps some alliteration? depending on pronunciation, mhackney's extruded efficacy, or mhackney's material moments.
I can do this all day

Re: Help me name my blog!
These are some great ideas, thanks all! Gives me something to work with.

Re: Help me name my blog!
Ok, I think I have it! This has been very helpful in helping me get my head around the core of what I want to do. I've made my first introductory post, done a simple design of the blog (this will be improved later) and was able to grab the name on blogspot - not an easy feat!
Here's the result: Sublime Layers
(and not to fear, I've addressed the concern about continuing to post here too!)
Tell me what you think, I suppose I could change it if something more interesting comes up. But, I like the "feel" of it. Subtle but pertinent.
cheers,
Michael

So... The beer is stays in your own fridge?
Although someone here mentioned to use "layers"... Maybe half a sixpack for SEBRET!
I took a look already. Nice, and contrasting: the old ringed paper against the modern topic.

Yes, I have to admit that the "layers" idea came from SEBRET's suggestions. Racking up the visits already!

Re: Help me name my blog!
it looks like you are off to a flying start
you might want to clear the dead links like this one in your introduction page at the CNC site http://www.3dfabricationworks.com
and in the next linked page your link to the early native american coil basket is stopped by a requirement to log into the site that hosts it

Re: Help me name my blog!
Bummer. I don't have control over that, it's owned by CNCCookbook. I can send Bob an email and see if he'll make some edits though. Thanks.

This seems like a good place to concentrate your best wisdom on 3D printing. I sometimes search for your posts because I figure you know what you're talking about.

Re: Help me name my blog!
Thanks Pilot626. I *try* to know what I'm talking about! But even with all the experimentation and testing I do, at the end of the day it still needs to be substantiated by others to be "fact". But it's a start.
Cheers,
Michael

Hey 626Pilot, thanks for the kind words for Michael and I agree with you, he has saved me from making some stupid mistakes more than once.626Pilot wrote:This seems like a good place to concentrate your best wisdom on 3D printing. Glad to see you were able to reach a decision. I look forward to keeping up with the blog.
