New Guy Denver

Post by JakeAtlas »

Hey everyone my name is Jake. I live in Denver where I work for a contract engineering company doing mechanical design. I work exclusively in SolidWorks and using it is 90% of my job. I have zero experience with CNCs and I bought the Rostock Max V2 to learn as well as do some prototyping for clients.

I finished building the kit about two weeks ago and it was a great experience. I learned a lot right off the bat and I'm learning more all the time. looking back I would have done 100 things differently, but I'm sure that's a good sign.

At this point the only trouble I'm having (besides being awful with circuits) is that I can't seem to find any sort of walk through/intro to the firmware, so I haven't been able to really fine tune my prints. It seems that most resources on the web are either an introduction to what 3D printing is, or for very advanced users. If anyone knows of any resources somewhere in the middle I would really appreciate any learning material.

I have a SolidWorks license for my home PC and I'm happy to do any sort of design work as long as I learn something, so don't be afraid to ask.

I'm excited to be a part of such a great community of folks that know much more about 3D printers than I do!

There is a user manual for the Rostock Max now, available in the downloads section of the main site (I think) or in the Official Documentation sub-forum. If you need anything explained, feel free to ask either in troubleshooting, if you're chasing down issues, or in the lounge for just verbiage stuff. It's good that you've enjoyed building the kit. I'm also really happy that you're willing to help others with design work, as that's a bit of a weakness for some people (Like me. Admittedly, if I was just machining it, rather than printing it, I'd just write the G and call it a day, but I don't have a mill of my own yet)

Thanks, I'll defiantly check out those threads.

I've been through the user manual and as far as I can tell it walks you through what you need to do to get the Arduino, firmware and Mattercontrol software installed on your PC and allow it to recognize the printer, but it never explains why you need to do anything, just that you need to do it. It does go through Mattercontrol in depth but that's only one of the three, maybe I'm missing something?

No problem at all! I'm eager to do something besides giant oil/gas assemblies.

Hi Jake and I would like to welcome you to the forum.
You got your printer built without a lot of problems and now you are looking for some reference material to help you with the firmware.
Such information is available on the Web but it is scattered instead of being centralized.
One good source of what G-codes and M-codes is located here: http://reprap.org/wiki/G-code

I have found that over time, you will locate many more sources and using the Google search is one of the best methods.
When you get a chance perhaps you could send us a picture of your completed printer.
We are happy to have you as a member and I wish you the best in your quest for learning material and I wish for you Happy Printing!
