I'm a cosplayer who basically bought a Rostock Max just for the purpose of one costume. It's a pleasure to meet you all.

Now here's the 1000$ question. Which costume? I know several people who used my college's machines for 3D maneuver gear, I've done lathe work to support FF cosplayers, and I've helped a guy who does vacuforming for 501st, among other things.

Oh, I mostly do anime and Japanese game costumes. I basically bought the Rostock because I was trying to make things bigger than my MakerBot could do.

I'll post some pictures tomorrow of what I've made with the printer so far.

The main reason why I bought the printer was to print out hand-held Japanese WWII-era naval cannons and torpedo launcher backpacks for this one costume. I'm not exactly a stranger to 3D printing before this, but coming from a MakerBot (where they dumb things down) was quite a shock, as I had to get used to doing a few things differently, and there are a few things I still haven't quite figured out yet.

I would post a picture of myself in the costume, but there's only one picture, and the lighting on it isn't that great.

I could put some more details on how this was printed and built in another thread if people are interested.

Nope. It was from one of the Shiratsuyu-class destroyers. (Hint, it's not any of the ones with the black uniforms.)

Oh I see, so either Samidare or Suzukaze! I was thinking it was a late-model since quad torp tubes but I see now that Asashio and Shiratsuyu classes had them too. CAD is somewhat new and time consuming for me so I would just use video game 3d assets(from ww2 naval simulator games), and fix the meshes up for 3d printing, if I were to print something like this.

Yup, it was Samidare, although I designed the costume so I can quickly convert it to become Suzukaze if I wanted.

I did the design work for the gun based on the art and some WWII-era blueprints that I dug up, and a friend of mine did the modeling for the torpedo launcher; I took his model and did a bunch of work to get it to fit within the print volume.

Yeah, I kind of got sick seeing all the Shimakazes/Amatsukazes/Fubuki-class/Yuudachis/Akagis and Kagas that I wanted to do something different (and she is my one married ship in the game). Also, most of the cosplayers who do this don't do their equipment.

I'm actually reprinting sections of the torpedo launcher to improve on certain things.

It's going to be a while before I do my next Kantai cosplay; it's probably going to be one of the Sendai-class (likely Naka or Sendai), or one of the Chitose-class light carriers.

Woah that's totally cool. Sendai-class is quite neat with their 5.5-inch guns and torpedoes/catapult. Chitose-class would be really a challenge to do their props right, I think the puppeteer planes would be quite hard to print right. I've tried 3d printing scale model propeller planes before but usually the propellers don't come out right
