Is this a stupid idea?

Post by Xenocrates »

So, I went to start putting heating in my chamber, and already had the controller in hand when I realized something. The Rambo has additional thermistor ports, and could easily run a relay in Bang bang (or even PID mode) to control the watch heat lamp. Has anyone tried this yet? I assume it would require changing the pinout in the second extruder profile, and moving it to bang bang (or delayed bang bang) for heat management, and adding a G code to the auto-added code to set a chamber temperature. But it saves us from having to spend 20$ on an external controller, and from having to deal with said controller, as well as allowing you to pre-slice G code with the correct chamber temps and have the printer wait for it to reach the correct chamber temp, so you don't have to manually mess with it. And since you have 4 thermistor jacks, you could even still do dual extrusion (although that would require slightly more firmware hackery)

Simplify 3D will let you add more heaters to the GCode. You'd have to have everything wired up and pinned out correctly, but that would let you control it at least.

I'm curious how the melamine did for anyone who's tried a heated enclosure. I've heard a few things recently about how much it warps under heat.
