Quick fix for warping

Post by DGBK »

I was about 2 hours into a 6 hour print, and things were looking good. It seemed like my brim was finally solving my peeling issues when I heard that familiar crack to signal that the print was peeling off the glass. I had spent the free time during my previous two weeks calibrating, recalibrating, setting my slicer settings, measuring filament, measuring my first layer, and repeating. I was seconds from cancelling the print (my third try at it for the night), when I decided that I should try to salvage it. I tried holding it down with my seemecnc spatula, but I wasn't going to be able to do that for 20 more minutes, let alone the 4 hours I'd need to finish the print.

I finally came upon a solution that seemed to work. I used some kapton tape that I happened to have on hand to tape down the brim. It held, and it held very well. In fact, the print didn't even come off the bed after cooling until I removed the tape. When I pulled off the tape, the part slid right off.

Obviously, be very careful when applying the tape to a hot bed. You may want to wear gloves and pause your print. I used my spatula to flatten the tape.
Here is my quick starting tape job. Judging from the outcome, it probably would have held, but I wasn't taking any chances.

Here is the finished product. It is a dock for an Iphone 6 that I got off thingiverse.

Nice save!

Are you printing with PLA or ABS?

What's the material over your print bed? Almost looks like tinfoil ?
Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast.

I was printing with ABS.

That material is just 2 sheets of aluminum foil. I put some small pieces of kapton tape over the vias, and then laid down two sheets of aluminum foil. I read a comment somewhere that it can help distribute heat evenly without adding much thermal mass. I can't vouch for how well it works, as I have no way of measuring the bed temperature at different points. It's soft and the heater is so warped, so I doubt it affects the flatness of the bed. You can't tell from these pictures, but you can make out the word "diamond" from the right angle.
