Print Distance

Post by jwierman »

So I have been printing quite a bit lately and I haven't seen this problem until now. The hot end is a just a bit to far from the bed so the ABS won't stick. I tried to recalibrate but it still is farther from the bed then it should be(not much just enough to be a problem). The weird thing about this is when I use a raft, the raft prints perfectly but when it starts to print on top of the raft, the print screws up again. The bed is level and the Z axis is set appropriately. I have a good amount of printing experience with a few different printers but this one problem is really puzzling me. Thanks for your help.

A few questions:

1) What temperature is your heated bed showing? (ABS likes 85+)
2) What are you treating your surface with? (ABS won't stick well to naked glass and typically needs glue stick, ABS juice, hairspray, etc.)
3) Is this happening with the test prints (e.g. the demo calibration cube, print fans), or with a custom print of yours? If you are doing a custom print, try a calibration print.
4) Does PLA print OK, or are you having problems with that as well? (Usually PLA is less persnickety than ABS)

Here's a pretty good primer on considerations for printing with ABS:

Good luck!

Do you get the same result independently of the slicer you use ?

If yes, it is a printer (hardware/firmware/calibration) issue, if no, it is a slicer issue.

Two other slicer-related possibilities:

- If your print consists primarily of vertical walls, check if your walls are too thin - some slicers will round down something gap thinner than half a nozzle width (or some other minimum) to zero, which would result in a gap.

- Check that the Z-position on your print is on the platform (i.e., it's not floating on the bed).

For both of these, view the GCode in your slicer to see if it is printing a blank layer somewhere.

As enggmaug suggested, try another slicer and/or different slicer settings.
