Thanks. It says to tape the center hole in the bed and then put RTV on the hole from the other side and then put the thermistor in the hole. Should it stick up through the hole to the top or stay on the bottom and just sit in the hole below the surface?

And when I'm finished, the led will just be hanging off the edge of the board?

Nothing should protrude through the onyx to the top. You will want to put borosilicate glass or an aluminum plate above the onyx. Based on that when you solder any components (LED, resistor, hook-up wires all should be on the bottom of the plate and not stick though. If they do stick through you will either offset your glass or have a flat cut to clearance the solder points.

If an aluminum plate is used it really needs to be notched so you don't short out the terminals. Kapton helps there also.

When you mount the LED, have it long enough so you can bend it around the edge of the onyx so you can see it. It doesn't have to be tight against the board.

The manual is just a suggested way of installing it. You install it how it fits you best. If you read my build log I show another way of doing it. http://forum.seemecnc.com/viewtopic.php ... 8&start=50 You dont want the thermistor sticking out of the hole, you want it flush to the top of the surface because you dont want anything to damage it.

as far as the led goes, you can mount it anyway you want, side is best if your gonna have another build surface on top of the onyx. I didn't mount my led on the bed at all and all my solder connections are underneath rather than on top http://forum.seemecnc.com/viewtopic.php ... 8&start=60

Those are good ideas. I think the hole confused me a little. It doesn't seem to really be needed.

the tape is there to prevent any rtv you put in there from coming out the other side, To keep everything flush.
another note: I didn't use rtv in the hole, once i had the thermistor in there, i fill it with thermal heatsink compound to eliminate all air gaps, then rtv'ed the back of it. I did this to get better heat bed readings. the high temp rtv somewhat insulates it and gives a little less accurate reading. http://forum.seemecnc.com/viewtopic.php ... &start=150

I believe the holes in the onyx plate are a by-product of the PCB layout. They are there to create a via from the bottom trace to the top traces. That is why there are also a couple more throughout the onyx.
