gap between rails and top plate?

No matter what I do, I can't seem to get rid of the gap between the rails and the top plate. My rails are loose at the bottom and have plenty of movement, the top plate lies flush against the rails when it is above the reference line, but as soon as I slide the plate down to make the line visible at the top of the rail there is an unfixable 1-2mm gap.

I've tried pushing the rails hard against the top but when I tighten the screws the gap comes back. Is there a trick I'm not getting? Is there a different fix?

In my opinion the whole no gap a the top thing is based on a bad assumption that the laser cut parts are in someway very accurate,
What you care about is are the 3 extrusions vertical relative to to the bed of the machine.

This is a big topic - many people (myself included) have this issue. The general consensus I've seen is that a gap is fine, as long as you have almost the same gap on all 3 sides. Mine had the same size gap roughly on all 3 sides.

I didn't even bother trying to adjust or fix that gap, and my printer is still doing ok - there's more important things to worry about besides that gap.

How about this for a better method:

1. Use a large square to align each tower in order to make it perfectly perpendicular to the plane of the base.
2. Tighten down the base of each tower as you align it.
3. When installing the top plate, perform the same procedure as #1, but upside down in order to ensure that the top of the tower is perfectly perpendicular with the plane of the lower surface of the top plate.

Will that achieve the desired end result?
