e3d v6 fan noise

Post by dchauran »

I just upgraded my max v2 with some dampers and an e3d v6 hotend. The fan on the e3d sounds like a jet engine. Not only is it loud as heck (louder than my steppers now that I have dampened them), but it's really high pitched. Is there a 30mm replacement option for this fan that is quiet, or am I stuck putting on a fugly 40mm shroud and buying a noctua?

Did you get it from E3D or an authorized distributor? Has anything happened that might have damaged it? None of mine have fit that description.

there is this at sub 21 DBa http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6835119046 It should be much quieter, although I'm with IM. Not had a really loud fan from E3D. But my sample size is small. For that matter, the stepper noise doesn't bother me much. That may be because I stick my head inside of lathe's a lot though. The smaller the fan, and the more air it moves, the louder it will be (A larger fan moving the same amount of air will usually be quieter by a noticeable amount). Thus the inverse is true (Discounting poorly designed fans being replaced with better ones)

If you really want quiet though, I would suggest working on water cooling your E3D, which will also improve your performance.

My v6's fan is quiet. I'd check with who you got it from about a replacement.

P.S. It's MUCH louder than the 25mm peek fan on the e3d hotend, so it does seem like it's possibly a bad fan.

They sent me a new fan, and it's much, much quieter. I'd still like to find an even quieter fan, but it's hard to find 30mm, 12v fans, and anything bigger doesn't fit on the effector, so I'd have to redesign the mount completely.

The thin 20 and 30mm fans are all noisy and I have yet to find a 15mm wide fan that I would consider to be quiet.
If you find one let us know! :)

Glad they got you a new one!

I'd like to find some quieter options for layer fans, preferably some that push a little more air, too. I'd go to a bigger fan, if needed. Since I went to the flying extruder configuration, the layer fans are the loudest part of my printer.

Someone on another thread mentioned Sunon Maglev fans. I have not tried one yet, but they do make 30x30 fans in 6, 10, and 15 mm thickness with 3 different speeds to choose from. They also make blowers which would be good for a layer fan. Now I just need to figure out what thickness is on the e3d, and where to get one of them.

Edit: looks like they use a 30x30x10, but I want to take measurements to see if I can fit a 30x30x15 in there. I think I could get the same CFM from a lower speed 15mm thick fan. It's definitely still the loudest part of my printer, even after getting the new fan.

Here's some 12V 2-wire fans I pulled narrowed down on digikey the other day. Most are Sunon fans which I am tempted with the MC30151V1-000U-A99 (6 CFM, 27 dB(A), 0.65W) but it is 15mm thick. There's another that's 10mm thick but it's 34.7 dB(A) 1.08W (?!) for the same 6CFM (although it does have a higher static pressure like a cute little hurricane.)

I ordered the 24v version of the stock E3D fan for my new build, and it's the loudest part of the printer. It isn't actually loud (something like 62db) but it's louder than the other V6's that I've run.

Not that big of a deal for me though, I don't think it's broken or out of spec, so I'm just going to run with it.
