New printer from the Detroit Maker Faire

Post by TruckerGeek »

My wife purchased the Rostock MAX v2 Desktop 3D printer kit for me at the Detroit Maker Faire. I started my Maker life just over a year ago when I was introduced to the Raspberry Pi 2. I'm a Microsoft guy (make a living from Microsoft technology, I do not work for Microsoft), so I loaded it with Microsoft Windows 10 IoT Core. From there I found the Arduino and have been working on little projects ever since.

My big holdback has been the ability to create cases for the work I am doing and I am not very good at modding existing cases to work effectively for my projects. When my wife saw the Rostock MAX v2, so decided she had heard me whine about cases and the desire to have a 3D printer for long enough and purchased it for me. I was not aware how much work there would be in putting together the kit, so I was a bit overwhelmed when I opened the boxes and saw all of the parts I would need to assemble. I have been taking it easy and working through one checkpoint at a time. While rusty, I think my soldering skills have been up to the challenge (I will see when I get far enough along to put power to it). However, my 50 year old eyes are having trouble identifying some of the parts (my 20 year old son looked at the pile and pulled out the piece I needed that I had been unable to find).

It is a great step in my personal Maker challenge!

If you have any trouble with it, give me a shout (I'm always happy to help local folks, and I am going to assume you're somewhere in probably SE michigan) Anyways, best of luck with the printer. It's a long process, but it's well documented, and quite a solid printer out of the box.

As long as you follow the assembly manual. and resist the temptation to "upgrade" right away, you'll be fine.

I have been following the instruction manual step by step avoiding interpretation and the desire to perform upgrades before I have it even built (I am thinking that is very good advise). I am reviewing each checkpoint video before and after I work on that section. By sticking to the build process and not rushing things, I have been able to make it into chapter 6 without any major issues. So far, so good. I was hoping to have it done this weekend, but I have not had the time to put into it, so it is looking like I should be able to start printing next weekend, which is perfectly fine with me. Going through the build process, I strengthen skills I already have and learn some new ones along the way.

@Xenocrates, we actually travelled from the West side of the state over to the Detroit Maker Faire. We are in "West Michigan" (in the Grand Rapids area).

Do you have a source for those baskets?
They look like they can come in handy.

I got the baskets at the local department store. I do not remember the brand.
