Sudden Erratic Printer Behavior

Post by Pyropainter »

My Rostock max V2 started showing erratic behavior. Previously it was running as expected. Tried to print a part and noticed that the extruder was continuously grinding away at the filament and the print speed seemed random. I did try a different slicer with the same results. To get a better idea of what was happening I removed the filament and ran the print above the heated bed. The extruder appears to be rotating about 1 revolution per second and the hot end is happy doing what ever it feels like slow, pause or stop but not the expected 30 mm per second. I did try re flashing the firmware and ended up with the same results. If you feel a video is necessary one can be provided. If so please suggest the best way to attach it to my next post.

Thank you for your help.

Post the video on youtube and link to it from your post.

Most likely this is a wiring issue, a loose connection. Are you sure that your hot end is up to proper temperature? What happens if you heat the hot end up to temp and then simply extrude filament into the air at 10 mm/s then 20m/s, etc ramping up in steps? Extrude 50 mm at a time so you get a good sampling.

I should have mentioned that I did do an air test without filament. That was how i was better able to judge the movement and speeds of the end effector and extruder.

I did as you suggested and made sure that the connections were secure and secure. Then used the terminal in Matter Control to issue specific speeds and lengths of filament to extrude. All acted as expected. Then did another air test, again as expected. Finally I ran a test print of the same part that led me here in the first place. It too ran as expected. I can not tell you which change, if any solved the problem. Should only changed one variable at a time.

Thank you for your generous help.

So are you good now or are you still having problems? Sounds like you might be on the right track.
