Skipping 1/100ths of z steps, possibly others.

Post by noisetank01 »

I noticed it a long time ago during z-calibration; it counts down, but skips occasional 1/100ths (.01) of steps along the z axis.

I.e.:
09, .07, .06, .05, .04, .03, .01, .00, .x9, .x8, .x6, .x5, .x4, .x3, .x1, .x0 etc...

Ive been struggling for about a year and a half and still haven't gotten to the point where I can ever confidently let the machine run and expect a good print. So, I've started wondering, perhaps this is abberant/undesirable behavior, and perhaps I'm skipping steps elsewhere along the x and y axes as well...

Steppers are Automation Technology model: KL17H248-15-4A.

Any ideas?

The position is just reflecting the fact that one microstep is slightly larger than 1/100th of a mm, so simetimes when you send a step signal the position on the LCD will show a change of 0.02, it's normal.
When people talk about skipping steps they are talking about the stepper not moving in response to a step signal, in that case because there is no feedback the position on the display will update, but the stepper doesn't actually move, resulting in the position the controller thinks the effector is being different to the position it actually is.
On deltas this will result in either a shift toward or away from a tower, or in some cases the print being printed at an angle.

Realize that 0.01mm is 0.0004" That is extremely small!

So this is normal behavior and I shouldn't worry about it?

What you described does not seem like a problem. How are your prints?

My prints are not great.

But if this is not something to be concerned about, I'll be okay.

If I need help with the rest, I'll articulate a thorough report of the symptoms in another thread.
