HE280 Gradually loses temp when bed heat on.

Post by Doug68 »

I've recently finished upgrading what was a Max V2 with the HE280 and Industrial power supply.
Previously it'd had the ATX type power supply in it.

I've been printing PLA on blue tape with the bed heat off the HE280 has held the target temp (220c) well maybe + - 0.5c.
Today more ofr LOLs than anything I set the bed temp to 40c.
Gradually over a period of baout 3 hours the nozzle temp reduced to 213.x at which point I turned the bed heat off and then again over a period of hours the HE temp has recovered to now be at 219.8.

The temp drop suggest the board is struggling to supply enough power?
The gradual decline / recovery might be associated with the the temp of the board maybe?

Ambient room temp is 32c the base temp is currently reporting 35.5c, the air being blown out of the base does not feel hot.

The thing is, I did the whole upgrade thing to over come issues where the old HE lost temp to the point it jammed, now I can recall ever trying it with the bed heat off :(

Any trouble shooting suggestions please?

Eventually I'm going to move on to need the bed heat working properly. Here's the job, you can see I have some way to go...

How powerful a power supply did you get?

It is this one:

Being it Australia its being fed 240v, 29A at 12v is 348 watts, I'm struggling to see where it'd use it all.

Looking at this from the V3 assembly guide:

1. I can see the wires are much heavier than the ones that came with my kit.
2. The power feed appears to be taken directly from the power supply?
3. The control being on the -ve side through the board? Looking at the picture below I see only the -ve going into Heat 2.

Both of my bed wires are currently going into Heat 2.
I'm guessing changing my machine to match the above should fix the issues.
Can the above be confirmed before I go and let the smoke out?

The v3 is a completely different printer - if you've updated a v2 with the HE280 and not the whole v3 chassis kit, do not follow the v3 wiring instructions for the heated bed.

Make sure the 115/230 switch on the power supply is set correctly.

Thanks, I'll look into this some more before doing anything.
