I wound up slowing things down both on extrusion and retraction. I'll experiment ramping things up slowly to see how far I can stretch it. My print speed right now is 35mm/s and retraction is 3mm @ 30mm/s. When I switch back from the Volcano to the regular E3D, I'll speed things up a bit since the nozzle size is reduced (0.25/0.4/0.6 vs 0.6/0.8/1.0)

You should be able to go much faster than that with a .4mm nozzle. Slowing down is a bandaid hiding a problem.
