The tank could have been scanned with a <$1k Camera system (I don't know).

I just wanted to show an example of photogrammetry that would put the concerns of "it's not good enough" or "it costs as much as the other stuff" to rest.

That trimbal scanner is actually a Faro Focus: http://www.faro.com/en-us/products/3d-s ... d/overview

Trimbal simply slapped their label on it and sell it for a slight markup.

But how much of that tank is really vertices, and how much is render magic? Look at video games, some of the models in game look awesome, but pull the obj out and look at it in some other program and it's comical. I'm not saying 3d scanning isn't great, it is, but there's a shit ton of extra work to do to the models after scanning to get it to look good.

Granted, the mesh probably doesn't look as good as the video made it out to be. I've personally had fantastic results with photogrammetry. As with anything, expectations just need to be realistic.

They also made VFD GPS receivers for aircraft. They worked okay. It seems like everyone wants a Garmin flight deck now.

I remember when MakerBot was pushing their awful scanner on Thingiverse. It produced meshes that looked like the source object had been attacked with a flame thrower, and they wanted well over a thousand dollars for it. The Amazon reviews seemed really angry.
