why not hang a counterbalance weight from a pulley or a spring or elastic cord to take the weight onto the top plate.
seems the logical thing to do.

Makes perfect sense... The magnets in the hard drive cause eddy currents in the aluminum tower, and it stabilizes it like a shock absorber. Just like the needle on a triple beam balance scale. Genius

Behold, the SCIENCE Tube.
(One of the lab techs on campus has a few of those magnets, and whenever there's tubing they fit in, he drops them through to show people. They spend the rest of the time stuck on various machine surfaces, although not any of the CRT's anymore (They can do some funky stuff))
