Poly, glad your here! Does a stripped (stripping) gearbox explain the issues I was having with this?

did you have all the bearings supporting the drive gear, I think there is 3 in extruder mount that support the drive gear. ultibots guy that sells these said if they aren't supported properly they tend to strip.
he says he uses these with no issues in his printers but i'll see for myself..

Please check that those gears are packed in white grease. The ones I have seen were not greased very well.

Yes, I used all three, there are two that set behind the drive gear and one in the idler assembly.

Took the PG35L apart and cleaned it up. There is no visable damage, so maybe my ire was premature. Here's some pics of the guts.

that' doesn't look stripped at all from what i can see...

Bet there wasn't much grease in there from the factory. Be sure to pack it good with white grease.
I have several of those and each one came new with barely any grease. Those are good little motors
if you keep them cool with the fan and plenty of grease. Good luck with them.

I agree Cambo3d, there was absolutely no signs of anything being worn at all. That leaves me guessing as to why it wouldn't extrude. I think I possibly had my current set to low. I know I could have added more current as there was no sign of even a little heat when it was running. I think this little fella is going to go on junior.

Carl, it had grease in it. just enough to cover the gears, barely. I ended up using a fluoropolymer lube I had sitting around. Did all the research I could stand into if it would react with delrin, couldn't find anything.

The grease you used should be fine. I agree on the current settings, these motors normally run hot, that's why
you must run the fan. Good luck with it Neil.

I wanted a way to purge and clean my nozzle automatically. So I made a thing. It attaches to one of the upright extrusions at bed level (I chose "Z"). It is in two pieces so I can pull the part that interferes with printable area off. The code I use (in theory, haven’t used it yet waiting for hardware) will drop the nozzle into the cup purge 3mm and then wiggle "X" back and forth. I'll probably repeat the process a couple times to be sure.

I foresee the benefit being twofold; one, no more grabbing strings of filament and making a mess, two, the purge takes place about 46mm over and 115mm away from the center of the bed.

Sam, it just pulls out of the block, switching it out would be fairly easy, I hope.

Carl, I have no idea. It came in a large multi-piece kit I bought off ebay last year. The shaft is 3.16mm so 1/8th ish. I think that is standard Dremel chuck size.

What might work well is brass wool used to clean soldering irons. I bet jiggling the nozzle in this would leave it glistening

I like your brush idea. You could stick the gcode for it in the "prefix" for prints and it would always do that before it starts.

Here is the code I put into the start of my prints. I use relative extruder measurements for Slic3r and this is set up for that. It homes, dives the nozzle into the center of the cup, starts heating the noozle and waits for it. Then, it extrudes 5mm wiggles, extrudes 5mm wiggles again, retracts 3mm and puts Y at zero.

I'm curious why your running with relative distance/gcode setup rather than the standard 5D Absolute the majority of us run?

Some unknown advantage? Are you used to it from a previous piece of machinery?

Well it started out as frustration when I would purge the nozzle manually only to watch the printer suck the filament out of the hot end at the start of the print. I also can't quite get my head around what happens when filament slips in absolute mode. If it slips on a retract for example, then it tries to rebuild pressure thinking that Xmm of filament isn't there, wouldn't it be prone to grinding the filament. No real reason I suppose, habit and making things like the code above easier.

A note on the micro extruder unit. I have it mounted on junior now, running like a dream. I have been a Wade's/Budda fanboy for so long, I am stunned at the clean lines of the Pg/j-head combo on there now.
