Has anyone experimented using infrared webcams or the Pi NOIR camera for monitoring thebuild? I'm not thinking of measuring the temperature as such, just that it would be nice to see something of the temperature changes as the build progresses alongside the timelapse or live-stream.

Checking the physics, it seems CCD cameras are sensitive down to around the temperature that we are working with, but it is very close. 300C is definitely possible, 100C is probably impossible. Exactly where the cut-off happens may be down to the sensitivity of individual devices. It may require a IR-pass filter to cut out visible light and let the sensor work with its low-light sensitivity.

I just wondered if anyone had tried it.

I have the Pi NoIR camera. It is fairly good. Yes, you would need an IR-pass filter because it will normally only show you visible spectrum light. I don't know how it would perform looking at a 3D printer in a pitch black room.

NIR (near infrared) cameras are not going to give you temperature data. That isn't even short wave IR. Thermal is medium to long wave IR.

I have both. Check thingiverse for "BazBot" where i have posted thermal images of my delta. Those images are long wave IR.

I have a NIR digital camera with an IR pass filter. Only infrared light gets through. I can do a few tests to prove my point.

I still find it strange to see near ir photos of full coke bottles and they're clear.

Did a simple test using my gas range. This digi cam has an IR pass filter that only sees IR -- no visible.

You can see the ends glowing ever so slightly (had to edit a bit to get them to show this much). They were starting to dim QUICK (read: cooling)
