I've found that when doing retracts the filament is getting out of the knurled groove by pushing the spring loaded roller sideways, like this (hard to see i know):

The clear plastic cover that goes on there looks like it is supposed to stop this happening, but maybe not given the one screw its held on with, so I've cabled tied the thing down to see if that fixes it (test print running now):

The annoying thing is it only seems to happen after hours of running, the extruder motor is running at about 40c at the moment (currently 32c abient in the room). I don't think that should be hot enough to stuff it up?

Also I'm running PLA and the retract settings are:
Speed 110mm/s
Length on move 6.8mm
Z lift 0.3mm
Min travel requiring retraction 20mm

Which is OOTB settings I think?
Should these be OK or is the speed too fast?
Is this a known issue of the setup? I didn't experience this for the first 6 months odd of using the machine.

Your images are not showing. 110 mm/s is INSANE retract for PLA. ANd your symptom is EXACTLY how an issue would present itself. Most parts of a print are simple - retract here, print retract there - repeat. But there are places where the retract frequency goes up. Those are where issues start building. Filament shreds in the cog, etc. Especially with a minimum travel of 20 mm you are probably not running into issues until later in the game. I bet if you reduced that to the 1mm or so many of us run you wouldn't last a minute printing.

Slow the retract down to 25mm/s, change the min travel to 1mm. I don't know what length on move is. These only apply to PLA. Want to learn more: http://sublimelayers.blogspot.com/2016/ ... racts.html

Thanks for the tips on the retract settings I'm running a part using them now.
The thing just looks better / more under control with the new settings and I'm only 1mm into the part
