Rostock Max V2 (upgraded to 3) with declining temperature issues

We have a Rostock Max v2 that has the new hot end and extruder--which I'm pretty sure makes that a v3. We've had it for a little over a year, and have finally got everything honed in and are printing things great!

Only I've noticed that on the last PLA print we set the temp for 230 (the thing we're printing called for this temp) and the hot end only got to 227. And hung there for 10 minutes before I gave up and tried printing at 220. Which worked. Only now I have the printer set for 220, and it's only hovering at 217.

Will this progressively spiral and get worse? The prints are coming out fine (at least the best they've been since we built the machine) but shouldn't they happen at the temperatures we've programmed? We've not tried anything ABS since the first print of the new hot end, so we know it can hit higher temps (at least it used to!) but this is just unnerving.

Any ideas?

I found similar issues when I upgraded my V2 to the HE280 Hot end but had the ATX power supply. As the room temps have slowly dropped this winter it was harder and harder for the machine to reach hot end settings. I could not get 220 when the Bed was also turned on to 80. So I upgraded to the current PSU the SeeMeCNC sells. That fixed the problem.

I think the spiral is due to cooling ambient temps and not to anything wearing on the machine.

SeeMeCNC now recommends on their Web site to upgrade to the better supply when upgrading the V2 hot end.

Can you show a link to what it is we -should- have?

You might want to try PID tuning your hot end. You can run: M303 P0 S230 X0 to do so. Personally I've had good luck with running it, letting the hot end cool to room temperature, then running it again. If you're using matter control, reset your connection before trying to do anything else after runing the tune.

Nope. It's still three to four degrees off when it goes above 220.

I had a similar issue, check the voltage from the supply and adjust it up, if its not at least 12.5v when the machine is idle.

You might hear the base extractor fan speed change during the operation of the printer, this thing is driven straight off of the PS so its speed is dependent on the V from the PS, as the current draw goes up the voltage from the PS is not that stable which is no problem, but I can now tell if the fan is not making enough noise then the V is not high enough and the temp control issues re-appear.

AND BE CAREFUL NOT TO ELECTROCUTE YOURSELF WHEN DOING IT!
