Has anyone attempted to put a micro extruder on the mount for the rostock vs using the bowden extruder?

something like this http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:43457 but for the rostock.

I'm totally interested to see if anyone has done this.
I HATE the bowden extruder. This thing is a huge pile of frustration for me.

dont look like it would be too hard, make a mount. but you will lose a little z height, because you would probably have to mount it underneath, instead of top. the rostock has plenty to spare.

I already have the extruder, just have to make a mount for it. right now its on the backburner. still have A little ways go before I start modding

Johann has been using a PG35 based micro extruder on one of the Kosel prototypes, the mount would probably fit the Max carriage.
Probably take some modifying to fit Steve'e hotend.

Its probably a little cheaper to cob something together that uses Steve's extruder with and one of those small motor/gears, but this kit might be the easiest implementation.

You could mount under the carriage like this http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:39966 , but I think I would try doing it above so I could keep print area as tall as possible.

I'm seriously considering something like this. The Bowden has been giving me nonstop issues and I can't seem to get this thing to make a decent print.

you wont be able to mount it above without hitting the rostock arms in certain moves

the extruder you show is the one i have, and plan to use if I ever get around to it.

I think if its mounted on the upper platform it could be okay. I'm also curious about keeping Steve's extruder but just mounting the motor above it.

Please post if you go for it. I'm curious how it turns out.

i'm still trying to get my rostock calibrated and aligned.. i haven't started printing yet.

Yeah, well I'm right there with you. Installing the Onyx bed and the LCD are my next action items when I have a free weekend.

found this on youtube, so its possible. I need to modify the stl so it can be mounted underneath. instead of modifying the ultibot extruder and making an adapter as he did.

Won't that add too much mass to the platform? What size motor does that use?

This is my first experience with a bowden extruder, I'm less than thrilled with it.

anyone here openscad savy? could take this file http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:43457 and make it so that the mounting ends are on the opposite side.

If you want to try a PG35L based extruder, you should buy a motor and a spare as soon as you find one.
They are not in production, there was a single batch of them made for a printer manufacturer, and everything for sale now is basically surplus new old stock.
Someone on the delta bot google groups said they asked the manufacturer what the cost for a small run would be and it was prohibitively expensive.

already have two =)

adapter made.. on my way to tryin this out. unfortunately, i'm not opencad savy. so had to do this for now.

I have one of the Ultibot microextruder kits and built it up with a J-head hot end. The printed parts were short change! I printed an adapter plate I designed but working out the geometry a bit. I'll have mine on top like the video.

I've run the extruder detached and it seems nice. I may replace the heating resistor with a cartridge before installing on my machine though.

I'm anxious to see pictures of it mounted and to see how she works. (Don't forget the fan!)

I'm guessing that black circular piece mounts to the platform and looks like the extruder is above the platform, If so you may have issues with it hitting the arms on certain moves. but if its mounted with the spacers like the original it might have enough clearance, now that i think about it.

I had planned to mount it underneath, I will lose z height but I'm compensating by getting longer extrusions. If your mount works better let us know. I won't lose z height and i'll have more z height in the end
also another thing that concerns me is backlash from the extra weight of the extruder, so i'm searching for better belts.

That's it but I have modified my delta head to provide a quick release capability. The 1" posts were replaced with 1/2" posts. There are no clearance issues. I'll post photos when I have it mounted up.

Regarding Z height, seriously, how much do you need? Printing something that tall takes forever! Sacrificing a couple of inches will probably be unnoticeable to most people!

Looks like the weight is making it jerky. Id like to see a faster print. But if it gets rid of the bowden I'd consider it.

That hot end resolves a lot of the issues I believe people have with the Max's system. I saw it first hand while testing my nozzle a few days ago. When I would push the filament in short of the melt zone, it would pull out with little to no force. If I applied pressure into the melt zone and extruded plastic, the filament near the top of the melt zone would melt just enough to swell/expand and fill the clearance between the PTFE and filament. When I pulled the filament out after extruding it required considerably more force to pull that swelled portion out.

I can only imagine what is happening to this pre-melted portion of the filamant with the huge retract/prime cycles needed to stop oozing.

As far as the micro extruder goes, it kind of defeats one of the main reasons I bought the Max. Big and fast.
