RMv3 Dual Extruders & Rambo

I have installed a second extruder on my RMv3 and updated the Firmware to the latest from github (master). When I use Repetier-Host to switch extruders, the LCD emits a horrid beep which never stops until I power off the printer. It appears as if it's a full halt of the controller as Hot-end fan and heater turn off as well as my LED light . Oddly enough the LCD remains lit during the beep.

Having the second extruder motor connected to the board or not does not make a difference.

I tried using the default EXT#_SELECT_COMMANDS and EXT#_DESELECT_COMMANDS in the firmware as well as the settings proposed by Humanzee. I even reduced them to:

Code: Select all

#define EXT1_SELECT_COMMANDS "M117 Extruder 1\nT1\"  // modified
#define EXT1_DESELECT_COMMANDS "" // modified
but that had the same result. My next test will be to remove the T1 from the SELECT_COMMANDS as it seems weird that it's in there, if these are the commands to run when the printer receives a T1. To me, that would create an infinite loop and cause a stack overflow.

This printer has been working like a champ since I assembled it back in December, with several hundred hours of print time so I am sceptical that it could be a wiring issue. I checked anyway and it all appears to be good.

I've looked through the forum, but I haven't seen any other posts about the Dual Extruders and Rambo, has anyone else had success with this configuration?

So when I issue a T0 using Repetier-Host, I get the beep and this in the terminal window:

Ok, So I think I have it sorted now. Right after I posted the reply above, I checked the version of Arduino I was using, and it was 1.8.something. Downloaded and compiled the sketch using 1.6.0 and all is well again. Now to test the real change code.

RTFM. :)

There's been quite a few successes with RAMBo and dual extrusion posted in this forum. Here's a writeup from when the dinosaurs got it working in late 2015. At the time, a change was needed for pins.h. That post has links to other posts, and github for changed/configured files. I don't know if that's still the case, since my RAMBo was damaged and replaced with a Duet.

Searching is a bit harder because of all the recent work getting the Y-adapter to work under various conditions. I don't think that's a comprehensively solved problem, but just getting two extruders on a RAMBo works for most people.

You got that in the terminal window because the baud rate the printer was at and the baud rate the terminal was at were different.

Still having issues, when I bring the hotend up to temp, and issue either T1 or T0 to switch filament, via Repetier-Host or using the LCD, only the motor attached to E0 will actually move. I can switch motors between E0 and E1, but still only the motor attached to E0 moves. I've contacted support, I'm guessing my board is faulty. I have a spare board I can try, will do that tonight.

Having the exact same problem and have been talking with support. When I transfer the gcode to an sd card, the printer still stops after it retracts the filament out of the way from E0 and then it stops before it starts to bring down filament from E1. At least there is no loud beep. Anybody having any success with dual extrusion??

I swapped out the board for another RAMBO v1.3 with the same results, only E0 retracts/extrudes.

Is the issue with pins.h still a thing that needs fixed for dual extrusion? Last time I downloaded Repetier Firmware I think it still was.

If you're using the current version of SeeMeCNC's fork of Repetier, then you just need to set the # of extruders in the top of Configuration.h.
Note that it's set up to use the "Y" adapter, so may do the retract cycle on tool change. I'm not sure as I've not used it yet.

I am experiencing exactly the same behaviour with a V2 upgraded with Y Dual Kit. E0 will behave normally E1 will not not move. Hardware and software debugging were not conclusive. At least I could assure all was set up properly. It must be something in the firmware. When I swap from E0 to E1 the printer kind of reset (LCD blink) and the nozzle/bed temperatures are reverted to 0. Extruders should come with two parameters, the tool identification (i.e. E0 and E1) and their heater resistor identification (i.e. T0 and T1). In first place this is very much confusing since extruders are also identified with T0 and T1 (external panel extruders support marks). In second place I see no settings for E1 heater set up to be equal to E0 one, since we have only one hot end.

I'd ping Pouncingiguana - he did the firmware for it.

So I figured out what my issue was. I needed to clear the eeprom. Now both extruders retract and extrude. I'll start the fine tuning over the weekend.

Great you succeed! I clear EEPROM every time and re-upload firmware subsequently. Sometimes the upload shows a bunch of messages. I found out that using my Macbook with the triple adapter USB/HDMI/Power was resulting in corrupted uploads. With the single USB adapter things are much smoother. I remain with the doubt though if this connection is not at the root of my issues. I will give a try uploading firmware with a Windows laptop.

I solved il too. I too had latest Arduino IDE installed, 1.8.3. Didn't know that this could represent a problem. So, installed 1.6.0, cleared EEPROM and uploaded firmware. The two extruders work perfectly. I will print with ABS so will need to fine-tune settings.
