Artemis(✓) or Rostock MAX v4 (X)

Update: I decided on getting the Artemis and will be using it without any upgrades. Before the Artemis announcement, I originally had planned to buy and upgrade the v3 to essentially what the Artemis already comes with. I returned most of the parts I already bought but will be keeping some (e3d v6 Gold, Panel Due, and some other parts) for future use. I plan on snagging a v3 Frame kit before they go away for good and rebuild my v2 as a highly modified v3. This means I will have a modded v3 just for tinkering and a stock Artemis as my main printer

I am stuck between getting the new Artemis and the Rostock MAX v4. I would like to get the Artemis but it has so many new parts that most of my existing upgrades to my v2 would no longer fit. On the other hand, they should fit on the v4 but it has a smaller build volume and no linear rails like the Artemis. Let me know what you guys think I should get and your reasoning behind your choice.

You shouldn't consider the transferability of "upgrades" in your choice calculus at all - without using the printer yourself, you've no idea if any upgrades are applicable even if they were to fit.

From what I know of both the Artemis and the currently available "upgrades" for other Rostock MAX printers, nothing currently exists that could improve the performance of the stock Artemis.

Salut,

If you want a buy a new printer from SeeMeCNC I agree with Geneb about not consider the transferability of upgrades and other. For sur its depends of what upgrade you're referring to. But for me you'll end up with a lot of similar parts in doubles.

So why not keep this V2 with its good upgrade and starts with another/new printer. If you consider a SeeMeCNC printer I'll wait for more info about the BOSS one.

So all of the printing specs seem the same on both except for the build height. How much print quality difference will there be? I'm leaning towards the Artemis because of the new rails but it seems like a steep price difference.

Wow, that machine really does look amazing. All metal frame and linear rails...

What about a PEI print surface, though? Would that be okay with the new autolevel? I'm glad every day I don't need to mess with a glue stick or bed adhesion slurry.

The only other thing I can think of changing might be going with a remote direct drive extruder like the Zesty Nimble if you'd like to print flexible filaments. But that's more of a pros/cons change than a strict upgrade. The Nimble has some speed limitations.

The Artemis build volume is 540mm by 290mm in diameter and it weighs in at 47lbs. :)

The heated bed is a 120v silicone pad attached to an aluminum heat spreader with the "typical" borosilicate glass build surface. The auto-level uses FSRs, so a PEI build surface is fine.

To a degree, when you talk about "upgrades," it sounds like the new machines have all the most popular upgrades (metal frame, 32 bit controller, FSR, simplified wire routing), or better (linear rails) already. That's very cool.

The only downside I see for SeeMeCNC is that I'm still really happy with my V2 and can't justify a second printer.

With the Artemis; (some fine points on the wish list)

I would like a stainless Nozzle, also want to make sure the printer frame has a screw to ground (even though the power supply case is ground, which should be mounted to the metal frame).

From the pictures there is plenty of room on the 1"x2" extrusions to mount an enclosure of some kind. BTW the 1" extrusion is far more ridged than 2020 which I have used in my own builds; 2"x1" is going to be a beast in terms of stability.

I just had to jump in on this one. How much print quality difference will there be? A lot. Does it make the good prints you get off a rostock worse? No. Does it make me only want to print stuff on an Artemis now that I have access to one: Absolutely. There's a noticeable difference in quality of parts that I get off the Artemis (and they're printed faster to boot). You get spoiled in a big hurry. Now I just have to figure out how to get one home without being tazed ....

Easy answer. Go find a fireworks shop. Buy smoke bombs. Go back to seemeCNC. Throw wallet on ground, run away with Artemis. Pay tolls with smoke bombs...

I went ahead and ordered the Artemis. No doubt it's the sweetest SeeMeCnc printer and hopefully I'll save money by not buying upgrades lol. The printer I was saying had the same printing specs is the new Rostock Max V4. It also has a full metal frame and the print speeds are advertised as the same. The only build difference I could see is the inline carriages and thicker post. I'm guessing the main difference will be when printing detail at high speeds. It'll be interesting to see the print differences once people get their Max v4 and Artemis.

linear rails should make a big difference with effector tilt.... which should help printing along the edges without a lot of software correction.

Pictures of the Artemis speak a "Rock Solid Frame." Perhaps I am seeing - Injection molded parts, reinforced with an aluminum plate, and then screwed through the folded U box on each side.. (just guessing here).

The plastic structural parts are glass-filled nylon. Pretty stout stuff.

And they're mostly to line everything up to make assembly easier - the Aluminum plates under them carry the real load and stiffen up the frame. The Artemis is a tank.

I told JJ that he needs to convince Steve to produce a body panel set that's been chromed instead of powder coated. Add a Cylon eye behind the "ARTEMIS" cutout.

Now you can add forest cammo to that request. Tank indeed. :D

A cylon eye? Nah, I'd got with an old school Knight Rider light

Where do you think the Knight Rider light came from?

Cylons are "older school" - they predate the stupid car. ;)

True, but I saw Knight Rider before I saw BSG - it was airing when I was a kid

The Cylons were '78/'79. I take it you were in the design phase back then? *laughs*

BTW, this is the best thread hijack I've seen in a while. :D
