Print quality woes

Hello all. Just recently upgraded my rostock max v2 with a titan aero , pei bed and ballcup arms. My prints thus far have improved but I'm stilling having a issue with 1 corner lifting on abs and corners not as sharp as they should be. Also there seems to be slight ringing. Can anyone chime in on trying to troubleshoot this. I tried lowering jerk to 30 and increasing acceleration to 2000


I sanded the bed with 400 grit and cleaned with alcohol. and ran bed at 90 this helped somewhat. Printing at 220 abs .6 nozzle
Using slic3r prusa edition all advanced settings are set to default but first layer set to 140%

What about layer cooling? I was having curling issues with ABS and was having to resort to rafts. I just got my Berd-Air installed, and haven't had a problem since. Granted, I haven't run many prints since installing the cooler, so I may be back to using rafts on the next print.

I generally print ABS at 225 (HE), and 110 (Bed).

I forgot that print was in abs. I was under the impression that I didn't have to do rafts and brims with pei. I do have the berd air max and it was on partially. My bed is maxing out at 95.

I would try a raft with the "Expand Distance" (in MatterControl) set to 0 mm. For some reason this seems to help my printer out (a lot!!) when it wants to start curling.

As for your bed maxing out at 95, I would take that with a grain of salt until I made an actual measurement of the bed. But it should go much higher. One thing to do is to not turn on the Berd-Air while you are heating up the printer, my bed wouldn't go above 100C with it on, and that's with the printer homed at the top(!).

I'm a bit of a voice in the wilderness on this, but when my Rostock power supply died, I replaced it with my Astron ham radio power supply. The difference between running your heaters at 12 volts and at 13.8 is considerable. :) If I ever have to replace it, I would go with one of these:

And I calibrate my bed using a dial indicator with a mount that I downloaded from Repables:

I use the 13 point calibration routine after doing the end-stop calibration first. Be sure to clear out the "X"ed "Require Calibration" box after you've normalized all of your points (by adding an arbitrary value to make them all greater than or equal to zero). If you don't then your printer might end up "air printing" for the first mm or two.

To be honest, bottom layer warping still eludes me somewhat (1 out of 5 times I still get some warpage), but I wanted to share simplify3d's troubleshooting guide https://www.simplify3d.com/support/prin ... to-the-bed

Apparently it could be a number of factors, but I think the best to consider is an enclosure. An inconsistent draft in the room could affect the quality of your print. I'd try throwing a plastic sheet over your 3d printer and see if that helps...and if so, consider installing one permanently...there are lots of options on thingiverse.

Also, I thought you shouldn't use a cooling fan on ABS? I think it would give you problems with layer adhesion.

It definitely needs a cover, a bag would be a good start I suppose. I still have problems with long, narrow extensions curling on me. As for cooling, it has made for smoother and more dimensionally accurate prints. Things like through holes on small parts are coming out nearly perfect!

Separation (adhesion) is actually less of a problem than before. But I know that I'm going to have problems when I hear sharp cracks during the print. :/

I've dialed back the flow a bit to 95 percent. The heated bed can get to about 95 96 but I can't get it to go any higher. I changed my heated bed wiring to 10 gauge as I had the infamous terminal block melting. I have cooling enabled, some parts would deform with abs.

I've never used matter control. I'm using Repetier host with slic3r prusa edition. I was playing around with the newer cura but hadn't played around with it since doing the arm and hotend upgrade.

One of the printer control programs includes a graph showing the output of your heaters. Use that while you are trying to heat up the bed. If the output to the bed is 100% then you have a capacity problem, if not, it's a control problem. Try that and let us know what you find out.

I switched from ABS to HIPS, it's much easier to print. :)

Right now I'm printing up a plane from 3DLabPrint, so I had to finally get around to getting PLA working on my printer. Of the two fans that I had installed, one had a dent in the shroud preventing it from spinning (however, it worked once I took the dent out), and the other was DOA from the get-go.

And Repetier has the temperature graphs.

Ok so I changed out the power supply from the atx to a 12v 20a regulated supply and the heated bed heats up pretty quickly. I've also switched the heater wires to the noodle like silicone wire.

The ringing is still there even with .9 titan aero and new ball cup arm upgrade. From the looks of it when printer moves you can see the motor rock ever so slightly.

acceleration is 3000 for x,y and z
I believe jerk is called instant speed change in reprap firmware this is set to 1200 for x,y,and z

I'm in the process of upgrading mine, and I put a sheet of ceramic paper under the bed. This will force more of the heat upwards.

You shouldn't see your motor moving...

Rather than shooting in the dark with your jerk setting, slow the entire print down and see if there is an improvement. If not, then there's probably something structural going on.

I have the the speeds down already. The motor motor rocks slightly on certain moves. With circles the ringing shows the most. On other prints not really a issue. Weird indeed.

Figured out the issue finally. I changed the effector to one that put the motor and extruder right below. I did lose some height but there's no more wobble. The one I had on before had the motor sitting above and the arms were farther out.
