Hi,
I have a Rostock Max V2 running a RAMBo of that vintage. In the house we've recently moved to the noise from the steppers is too much at night.
Searching the web I've come across the Trinamic 2130 driver as a much quieter driver, obviously the RAMBo has drivers on it so is it possible to drive external drivers from the existing board or would it mean binning the current board and going for an Einsy-Rambo?

Doug68, for an extra $50, you can get a Duet 2 Wifi. Couple that with either an SE300 hot end assembly or a Duet Smart Effector and your existing hot end, you'll end up with a dramatically better printer.

I'm running the HE280 which probes for calibration, so I think that's under control, I've also moved it to the later style of extruder and the generic 12v power supply rather than a PC based unit.
Looking at the duet I see it has quiet drivers, it's either do that or build a 'clean box' for it to go in in the garage where the noise won't bug me, but temps and humidity will vary a lot more.
I'll have to read up more on the duet and see if that there's more in it other than noise to get me excited enough to buy one

There's two advantages to the Duet. The first is "nice" - that's the ability to control the printer via a web browser. With the addition of the "DuetRRF" plugin to Cura, you can fire jobs straight to the printer from Cura.
The second advantage is absolutely huge. Since the Duet uses a 32 bit CPU, it's got a ton more "horsepower" in comparison to the RAMBo. This allows it to do true auto-calibration, including doing a 69 (or more, it's configurable) point bed probe to map the bed surface. The down side to it is the cost - it requires a precise z probe to the job. That probe comes in one of two forms, the pre-built SE300 that SeeMeCNC sells, or the Duet Smart Effector. Both use the same strain gauge design. The strain gauge is made from the inner layers of the four layer pcb. The probe touch is detected by a little onboard controller that detects the difference in resistance of the two layers as the pcb flexes. It's actually pretty cool.
If you don't want to go down that road now, no worries - if it's not broke, don't fix it.
You might try putting the printer on a cork pad to see if that helps with the noise. Another option is sticking it in a narrow cabinet from Ikea - it'll muffle the sound and you'll end up with better prints due to the lack of cool air hitting them.

In the end for various reasons I built a box to put the whole printer in, that's keeping it quiet enough for now.
And hopefully I can work on successful ABS printing as well now ( as I have 2 unopened rolls). Then onto PETG etc....
