Is my hotend temp too high, or am I just printing a difficult/overhung part for ABS with no layer fan?

Loads of questions.... to start: I printed a crappy fan out shroud out, installed it and then printed a higher quality one for use... the true nature of reprap I think.

Not a definitive response here but it is what it is:

Sliced with what? I ended up using Cura and then modified the headers and footers.

Temps - definitely. I ended up with about 234 (I'm in San Diego and the ambient is always about 67)
Speeds - slow way down, seemed to help
Layer height - tried from .1 to .4 - no real changes - same problems

BTW, don't clean up your bed on our account! LOL

Ironically, I have the "new nozzle" so this duct won't help me use a fan anyway, but it's become a useful test object so I intend to make a few more of them

To test my temperature theory, I printed the same fan shroud at 225 instead of 230. This does get rid of some popping, so I think it was a good adjustment, but it didn't change the quality of the print in a noticeable way. The new print came unstuck form the bed and didn't finish, but what did print is telling. Interestingly enough, it has all of the same flaws in the same places. Exactly the same.

I'm using Slic3r at the moment, but I tried Cura earlier on some other things and I like its results a lot better. I couldn't get a good .55mm test cube with Slic3r, but Cura nailed it. (previously my wall thickness would vary, but the new print is dead on) So I guess my next step is to try the same print with a different slicer program and see what happens.

I noticed that little tidbit about the fan shroud on Thingiverse. Since you also have the new nozzle and are printing these out, maybe you could help me out. Why exactly doesn't this shroud fit? I could modify the file if I knew the nature of the problem.

The old nozzle is longer. This shroud is taller than the distance between the aluminum of the hot-end and the tip of the nozzle where it needs to touch the print.

Since I'll have a couple of them around, I'll try sanding or filing one down to see if I can get it to fit
