Extruder Gearing

Hey Guys,
I just built a Max and I'm having pretty good luck with getting up and running thanks to a lot of great information here. With the exception being the extruder drive it's loosing a ton of steps on fast motions. I've tried adding current, going down to 4 microsteps and playing with the tension. Now I'm looking to see if anyone moved the stepper pinion to drive the input on the filament drive and remove some of the reduction?
I know there is a new extruder, but I'm a little bitter that I purchased my kit the weekend of the Maker Faire, online, waited a week for the thing to ship, and by the time I get my printer running there is a new version of the extruder. I asked for an exchange for this defective extruder design and I was told no.
I plan to post my build shortly.
Review : The design is so close to being great as is, it just needs a little tweaking, QC on the plastic parts and for the 80/20 to be cut more precisely mine were +/- .100.
