Extending stepper motor wiring

Post by jmick »

I have a question for one of you electricians out there. Is it okay to extend the wiring on a nemo 17 stepper motor with solid wire speaker wiring? Will I lose power or increase resistance?

Generally not a good idea to use speaker wire for power wire since the insolation on speaker wire is softer and typically doesn't stand up to heat as well as electrical wire. Ignoring that, if you use a smaller gauge (larger size) wire than your stepper motor wires you wouldn't have any issues besides solid copper being less flexible than stranded.
