I liked the description of this project on Kickstarter - Fuel3D - but I can't stand the price!!!
The electronics behind this aren't complex once the software is written.
In three years, these will be $100. Worth investing now? Not sure.

John have you checked out 123Dcatch, free software that works from photos, surprisingly good.
Or, http://www.david-3d.com/ which is also excellent.
There is one more good free choice, I can't remember right now however.

Re: 3D Scanners - It's coming fast
There's also one that was bought by 3DSystems that didn't get to market. I was hoping that my friend Ash Martin, who with a buddy created Viztu was going to get out of the gate at 3D but it appears that they sucked him into other roles.
Their software allowed you to upload a movie and it created an STL. Now, I'm thinking it was an aqui-hire instead of the IP. Who knows, 3D buys everyone.

Re: 3D Scanners - It's coming fast
I'm in the midst of using a Microsoft Kinect and Skanect software to get front end model scans. If you go this route, be sure to read about "near" settings. There are two different kinect's. One is the xbox version, the other a commercial scanner option that has this extra setting. Big difference in price of course! I'll post my progress. (Tough to find time right now, college shopping with my son.)
I have also used a laser line level with David Laserscanner-http://www.david-3d.com/ Fair amount of learning curve, but free! Haven't tried printing any models yet...but "It's coming fast"
