I'll allow it this time because we don't seem to have a "generic, yet on-topic" forum other than this one.

You're lucky though - after deleting a few hundred spam messages on my day off, I'm rather cranky. :D

Thank you and John at SeeMeCNC for deleting all those low life spammers. That was the worst I have seen on any forum.
What's weird is all the accounts created in the last two days, they have a lot of accounts to work with.

A huge contributing factor is the lack of rate-limiting on the posting. A 15-20 second delay really cramps their style. :D

As much as I hate to see a non-contributer make money off the site, I will have to say the quality of their filament is very good. Bought two rolls when they spammed last time.

Neal, I'm glad the filament is good but I hope we don't start seeing a rash of these advertisements.
If they want to advertise they should contact SeemeCNC and pay for the right to advertise on this forum otherwise
it is just spamming.

I'm probably the angriest spammer-hater here, but because they're selling stuff that's *specifically* related to what we do here, I don't call it spamming. It IS kind of rude though.

I would turn off new thread creation for anyone who hasn't got at least five posts.

I couldn't agree more. I was honestly hoping the filament would be feh. That way I could post my testimonial, only fair that I eat it and mention it is quite good.

I do understand that it could be a pain for your valued members if too much advertisement.

I suggest adding a new page "Marketplace", so it will be much less trouble for your members.

We have a SeeMe's List subforum for selling things. Someone who just wants to come here and use the forums as a toilet, dropping links to their product everywhere, should be IP range blocked. On the other hand, if a vendor comes here and is respectful, and they just post in SeeMe's list, it should be OK. If they want to get involved in the community that's better as long as every post isn't an excuse to namedrop their product. Some board owners will monetize this by offering to put "Sponsored By (link)" under certain forums, offering paid sticky threads, requiring that if you link to something you sell (commercially, not one-off) in your signature you have to pay for the privilege, etc.

You can also act as a clearinghouse for third-party products. For example, the CarveWright store sells CNC wood carving machines, but you can also buy third-party dust collection systems and they have a marketplace where you can buy carving projects by community members. That might be a little further down the road for you, but something to keep in mind. I might get into selling Rostock mods (stuff you can't print) and I would love it if there was some way to ship product to you, even on consignment, and then you could sell it and take a cut of the profit. I'm sure other people (like Brian from TrickLaser, and Cope who is working on custom nylon filament) would be interested in that idea.

I think blocking friendly competition hurts your users in the long run. However, there is no reason to allow a third party to profit off the community that you've built here. I say if they want to profit off what you pay for then it is only fair to ask for compensation for the use of the tool.

I'm in favor of a tit-for-tat approach. If a vendor wishes to advertise here, they should be willing to host a banner ad of some kind for this website. After all, we can't print without filament and filament vendors have no customers without printer owners, so some form of symbiotic relationship seems best to me, rather than some outright ban.

There is another forum that I lurk on, they charge $200 a year for a "Vendor Membership". It allows the profile their own topic in an advertisement area to promote specials, more importantly it helps aid communication. It also allows for banner ads to be loaded into sigs.
