My RX-7 project that motivated me to get into 3D printing

Figured since most people here are builders/tinkerers/engineers/hobbyists-to-a-fault that some might be interested to see my "primary" project, my '93 Mazda RX-7 track car. Prototyping parts for it was the main reason that 3D printing appealed to me (then I realized all the other cool stuff I could do, so I had to have one :D). Anyway, I have been writing articles documenting the work and the parts used....I like to think of it as an overkill build log. The second article just came out today and part 3 will be published in a few weeks, so check it out and let me know what you think.

Looks cool! I like rotary engines and an LS1 V8 in a tiny Japanese car is hilarious. What are you doing with your Rostock?

Right now, trying to get it running correctly (first print was yesterday). But overall, I have several plans for it. The most obvious being in-house rapid prototype of parts...both bent sheet metal brackets and machined components. I also plan on picking up the E3D hotend to print some functional nylon components including ducts for my oil coolers, a double-din stereo delete panel that will house gauges, and other various small parts.

The E3D is an excellent hot end. There is a Rostock MAX mount for it here. I hope you'll post photos of some of the things you prototype installed in the engine bay and elsewhere.

Really interesting work there you are doing.

Particularly like the Supra posts and the professional and clean look of the site.

I myself have swapped a 2JZ-GTE into a MKIII supra, of which I am the original owner. Painted, wiring all done by myself.

I put down 680RWHP with it last summer.

Will continue to follow your page and welcome to the forums!

Awesome to see another rotary Rostocker. My rotary history goes something like this...

My first rotary car was a silver FD in 2002. Sold that car in 2004 to buy a 350Z. Sold that in 2007 and bought another FD (my current black one). Then in 2008 I picked up a silver '83 GSL w/ 103k miles for a cool $620 because it didn't run right. Fixed it up and drove it 40k miles over the next 5 years, but sold it this past March.

I've never had a FC and probably never will (never been a big fan of the shape), but I would love to have another FB...preferably a clean 84/85 GSL-SE.

Here is my first FD...

and my FB...

and one of the FD and FB together...

I like the garage pic.
Ive had a first gen since the late 90's
the blue one i got for 1000$ (but it didnt run) oil leak at the filter
I replaced the rubber o ring and it ran every since.
The FB has a wide body kit and duel webbers with a bridge port
The FC i got from the guy next door for 500$. im not a big fan of the 2nd gen. but i couldn't past it up. if it wasn't a convt. i wouldn't have got it.
The FD needs a wire harness, its all dryed out. I went to arizona to get that one

that is awesome you are using the printer for real functioning parts. it seems like alot of the 3D printing world advertises sculptures and vases, getting back to engineering and design is refreshing.

Keep us posted on progress and parts printed then used and subsequently broken (sometimes it is inevitable). The is a solid forum for design input, printing settings, and general know how on making functional parts.

Cheers,
David

I would love to see a dyno of this. How much torque did you get at the wheels? I always look at that figure first.

This is really the silver bullet. Most of the stuff you see on Thingiverse is either stuff you only need if you already have a printer, or bric-a-brac mantle pieces that would not motivate a person to spend money getting a 3D printer. This is actually good for something.

Another article was posted the other week. Expect to see the Rostock Max and some printed parts in the next article :).

I know nothing about cars but I do drive a miata for work, and plan on using my printer to make it a bit more comfortable. you don't happen to have any 3d models of a 2000 interior do you? I just want to make form fitting stuff with out prototyping 5 times just to get it to fit.
