Avatar 6 KiB?

Post by thosj »

How to get an avatar small enough to post here? No matter what I try with Light Image Resizer, I can't get one small enough to upload. How are you guys getting such nice looking pics for your avatar and getting them to 6KB? My standard avatar always posts to other forums fine, I guess the forum software simply resizes it to something it loves, what's up with the tiny limit here?

John,

PLEASE reduce the file size of the avatar to under 100k. If you leave it at 2mb and you get a boat load of people not resizing their avatars correctly, you are going to KILL page load times on slower connections.

Well, it now says it's 2KiB, whatever 2 KiB is. Previously it said 6KiB, didn't it?

Now, when I browse, and hit submit, I get NOTHING, no error, and no avatar upload.

What do other forums do, this is the first one I've had balk at my 222k avatar?

I can't do it. I browse to the jpg on my computer, clidk, nothing happens. Before the limit was changed I could browse/click and get a warning my file was too big, wanted to be under 6k. Somwone changed it, but now it says 2KiB, whatever that is (2K?) Now when I try, nothing. I guess the question mark is it for me.

Hey John,

Can you up the avatar KiB limit? It is set to 2000 Bytes. I have had problems in the past thinking I was setting it to 2000 KiB, but it was just 2000 Bytes.
You can change the value under ACP, left panel 'Board Configurations' and then 'Avatar Settings'. I usually up it to around 100000 Bytes. If the forum is a really heavily used one (or will be) you want to limit the size to no more then 25KiB to 35KiB.

i realize this is a really old thread, but I seem to be having the same problem. no warning/fail notice. I cropped my pic down to 9.85Kb, and when I select my JPG nothing happens. My file name appears next to browse but the white box with an X through it remains unchanged. am I stupidly missing the upload button or something?

EDIT: Yup. I was missing the really prominently displayed submit button at the bottom

Unless you have a decent photo editor you probably will have trouble getting your avatar exactly the right size. Both pixel dimensions and compression. I don't believe Paint has the cajones for that sort of work.

You can shortcut this by just choosing one from one of the many 'avatar sites'... Just browse through and find something :) preferably an Adventure Time one ;)

IRFANVIEW works perfectly for viewing and resizing image files and it is freeware. I've even heard that it will run on Australian computers.

Damn... Both my machines came over from the USA with me.. No wonder it doesn't work for me. Luckily I have this American program, Photoshop, which does a horrible job with photos, but at least I can make a .gif with it :P
