You wouldn't download a car...

Dunno if this advertisement was an Australia only concept, but it polluted the start of hire and purchase DVDs for many years here. Essentially trying to link copyright infringement with theft in the punters' minds it started by the innocuous download of a movie and moved on to things like "You wouldn't steal a car". Fortunately, all pirated videos had this rubbish deleted so if you grabbed a knock-off you weren't forced to watch it before your movie.

Wait - here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HmZm8vNHBSU

"You wouldn't download a car". Like hell I wouldn't.

Honda apparently agrees and approves:

agreed. why wouldn't you download a car? because ... you feel sorry for Chrysler? Or Disney?

honestly I'm at a loss why anybody thought this was a persuasive argument. And I'm a goddamn IP lawyer.

There's good reason it's referred to as "Imaginary Property". :)

What kills me is that the MPAA/RIAA *INSIST* on calling copyright infringement theft when the Supreme Court has declared it not to be (Dowling vs United States).
I figure it's because hot button words like "theft" and "steal" are more useful in manipulating your target audience than "copyright infringement"

Likely because they figured out that when they call people an infringer, far too many thought they were called someone that wears or attaches fringes on clothing.

You might feel differently if you had your IP given out for free against your wishes. I think most peoples' opinion on piracy is based on the fact that it doesn't concern them directly.

The ones that really turn my stomach are the one man programmer that comes out with a good product like Kisslicer as an example and instead of buying
the Pro version they will spend hours trying to find a "crack" for it to avoid the $40 fee. This is probably not one of the best examples but you can see my
meaning. People work long and hard developing software and many out there work long and hard to crack it so they don't have to pay a small fee. I feel
that if you find software that works well and you are going to use it and the developer wants to charge for it then pay the charge or do not use the
software.

I've had software pirated in the past, so don't presume to know the basis of my opinions.

I'm smart enough to understand that when someone pirates software that I've written, it's not a lost sale, it's just a jerk doing what jerks do.

Fair enough, then. The same happened to me. The source to some of my best and most unique work was stolen due to a security hole and handed out. I felt every bit as deprived as I would be if someone stole something physical from me. I had spent over a hundred hours working on this code and it was doing things no one else's could. The notion that someone else can profit from my efforts against my will and without giving me a dime does not seem ethical to me. These days it wouldn't upset me nearly as much (long time ago) but I can still clearly see the harm in it. It involves violating other peoples' boundaries, disregarding their rights and disrespecting the labor they put into their creations. It's sociopathic. This is mainly why I get irritated when people talk about piracy as though no one should think it's a big deal.

Swiping source code is beyond the pale. To me that's not piracy, it's industrial espionage and should be prosecuted accordingly.
