Print is not complete

Post by derwoodvw »

I have been having a problem with prints not completing even though the printer says 100%. Could this be a slicer issue? I am printing with a memory card, is it possible that the whole file is not transferring to the card.

Could you give more details? How far is the print getting / are there certain parts missing / do you know the file is 100% complete with no errors? Maybe post the file you're trying to print to see if others have the same issues with it?

You could try a gcode simulator onilne to see if the file is complete.

It has happened both times I tried a print. The first time it stopped at what I would estimate 95%. I resliced it and the next time about 75% complete. Both times the printer display had reached 100%. I put the card back in my pc to view the gcode and it showed the full object. I am using Slic3r. Also when this happens, even though the display says 100%, the print head does not go back to home position.

Is this the first Orion you had or is this the second one that they have sent you?
And is the card that you are using the one that came with the printer?

This is the second one. The first one had problems. Yes, I am using the card that came with it. I have had some successful prints and it seems to happen with large prints. I know when it is going to happen, when the completion display reaches 50% and the print is obviously not 50% complete. Shure enough the print stops at 100% but is not finished.

It is difficult to diagnose but IMHO it sounds as though the card reader portion of the LCD has contacts that are not in intimate contact with the contacts on the Card.
You may need to once again contact [email protected] and explain to them what is happening.

If anyone else is having this problem, I have found the cause. When using slic3r and repetier, you need to wait a full 60 seconds from the time you load the gcode until you pull the card. If you pull the card too soon not all of the gcode is transferred. Check the layer count before you put the gcode file on the card. After you put the file on the card, view the gcode on the card to see if the layer count is the same. I think the progress meter on the machine is controlled by the layer count. I pulled the card after five seconds and the layer count was 205 and should have been 248. Repetier does not tell you when the file transfer is complete.

There's actually a little hint that the transfer is done, at least on my laptop. The toolbar on the left side of the viewing pane resets. I watch for that and have never had an issue.

I spoke too soon. The same thing happened with cura and the layer count was correct. I have had this machine for a weak now and this has happened too many times. Seems to happen on larger prints. I am beginning to think this printer is not ready for the market.

I talked to Guanu about this problem. He said that the memory card that comes with it, is a cheapo that comes with the lcd screens that they buy. He recomended using a class 4 or higher card. It seems that he was correct because my machine completed a print job that it would never complete before.

Let us know if it still works good after a couple of weeks. That is an interesting solution and if it works long term we need to know that so others can benefit from what you have
found out. Also, the manufacturer of the card you bought and its class would be needed information.

The machine has now completed all of the prints that it would not print before the sd card change. I am using a class 10 card. The classification mark is a 2,4,6 or 10 with a half circle around it. If you can't find a mark on an sd card, then don't use it.
