Sugar Mix for ABS

Post by Prozac »

After having problems with large prints lifting using glue sticks I decided to go ahead with and try some ABS juice , and and worked but one corner did lift a little still , so I killed it and had to clean the mess off. Then I stumbled upon a post somewhere about using sugar water so I dump some sugar in some water shaken not stirred , and applied a cold coat and a hot coat and is working great. Currently printing Bubbasnows enclosure(http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:213632/#collections) , thanks btw.

Well good test , and it concludes that I need a chamber , the suger/water mix works really good , it actually didnt fail , was an hour away from 5 hour job. the fact that the woman got hot , which it was hot , cracked the window and 5 mins later , snap crackle pop, Fail!.(old house /wind advisary) Got watching a movie , should have been monitoring for temp changes. So I printed this really small. Object ,lol phones dead , its late , will continue tomorrow.

Are you saying that it cracked your glass build plate?
You are the first that I know of to try sugar water, are you using PLA or ABS?

No the wife , opened the window in the room with the printer , room temp dropped like maybe 3 -4 degrees and the whole printed piece completely detached with only an hour left of a 5 hour print. Yeah not sure where I read think it was maker bot , but it works , just mixing sugar and water together and get some on your fingers gets sticky pretty quickly . Now there maybe a factor that after 4 hours of printing the sugar water cant hold up ,not sure , but 5 mins after my wife open the house window , it popped off the glass.

Heres the link I beleave I read about sugar water adhesion
http://forums.reprap.org/read.php?4,121996

And when you think about it , makes sense , easy to clean up. Atm im testing again with abs juice /trashbag encloser same piece , and Ill do the same with the sugar water , and post my results.

That link you gave is interesting reading. I may have to try the sugar water, 10 grams sugar to 100ml of water.

Just printed the bottom left support , with no lifting using ABS juice , was a bitch to get off basic let cool down , and you can start to hear it crack and pop then I used to pliers to bind and twist it off. Next up bottom right support , using sugar water , was just thinking spray bottom to make sure even coats but just a thought.

Well while printing the same piece using sugarWater mix it seems to fail regardless after about 4 hours of print time. So It appears maybe the mix I made or just period , cant last over larger time period prints.
