JT's H-1 build log and mods
JT's H-1 build log and mods
Well I am going to start an official build thread here.
I purchased mine several weeks ago and assembled it and got all the electronics and configs done and tested motion. Then I promptly disassembled it as there were a few areas that i thought needed attention and I am not one to leave well enough alone!
So the list of mods starts with an 8mm linear bearing upgrade, all bearings and rod were purchased from ebay (VXB).
I also replaced the idlers with 608 bearings as well.
When I first put it together I noticed a lot of flex in the Zaxis as well as a wobble that tended to vibrate the machine. So for starters I replaced all the all thread throughout the machine with 5/16" and modified the clamps to accept the new rod.
The Z wobble was a little harder to track down, I have heard complaints of the Z screw being bent so I checked mine against my granite surface plate and they appeared to be fine. so I chucked them up in my lathe and they appeared to run true as well. So back in they went only to wobble some more.
They were also a little slop in the lower bearing. So I purchased some from the LHS and I gotta say not all allthread is created equal as the new stuff I bought was much tighter in the captured nut on the Z.
I also ran them against my wire wheel to clean any burrs off and clean up any loose material on them.
I found the bottom of the nylock was actually the culprit for the Z wobble as the bottom face was not flat, so I chucked it back into the lathe and trued the bottom of the nylock and re-installed, nice and smooth now, no discernible wobble any more WOOOOOO!!!!!
There will be more to come as well as pics soon

Interesting I hadn't considered the bottom of the Nyloc as a possible source for the Z wobble, I'd just assumed it was a function of the threaded rods and the lack of top bracing.
I'm going to have to tear it down again and look now

HAHA I know that one Dave! I will try to get some pics up tonight, its not completely assembled yet but I can snap some pics.
I still have to machine the 4 Z bearing blocks, and those are the last pieces to machine. I am using some
UHMW-PE that I had laying around. It doesn't have much in the way of thermal resistance so the X bearing blocks might be a re-do depending on if they hold up. Its ok though as I have plenty of Al to work with as well.
I am currently working on the electronics enclosure as well. I personally cant stand to have all these electronics out in the open so they will be housed in a plastic enclosure that the printer will sit on.
Q: Is anyone running the stock power supply with a heated bed?

As promised Dave here are some pics of my progress so far. I am going to finally order some filament tonight as well as the heated bed.

OK JT I believe you now
Looks real good. I have not done my z axis linear bearing mod yet. Trying to get the heated bed going. I have some printing for a job I need to get done ASAP.

Re: JT's H-1 build log and mods
On the Z fixed plates instead of turning the 8mm rod down I chucked it into my lathe by the boss and bored it out to 5/16" for a nice snug fit, I aligned it with a .25" drill in the tailstock before tightening the chuck and was surprised at how well it worked! I was sure I would be remaking them out of AL seeing that thing whipping around, but all turned out well.
Some of the flex I see in the frame is coming from those plates, but I think an extra "foot" on each side would serve wonders for that, but I gotta keep telling myself this thing isn't going to be machining metal.

WOW!
You need, no wait, YOU HAVE to post the stl files for your upgrades.
Fantastic job!

Fantastic!
Absolutely, please post the stl files.
I was going to upgrade to the metal bearings but, now I think I'll go with linears and 8mm rods instead.
Great work.

I will try and get them posted up tonight or tomorrow, I will have to convert them as all I had drawn were the .dxf's for machining on the mill.
The outriggers are from the seemecnc .stl same as the blue blocks just not split.
I also will post up an issue I had with the 5/16" allthread mod as well. Not a biggie but just want address it here just in case anyone follows suit.
Thanks for looking!

Re: JT's H-1 build log and mods
JT,
Do you have more details on the bearings and smooth rods that you used?
Sizes?
Part numbers?
If you could get as detailed as possible that would be great! Then we could move it over to the Mods section so it's easier to find.
Also how are you slicing the stl's and could you share your settings?

Re: JT's H-1 build log and mods
First, sorry not to clarify earlier, the parts were machined on my cnc mill not printed. I dont even have any filament yet haha, got some on order from protopardigm. Even picked up some glow in the dark!
The 8mm smooth rods were ordered in 30" lengths (need 3) on ebay from the seller irvineman, (VXB) http://www.ebay.com/itm/8mm-Shaft-30-76 ... 5d303b69f5
The 8MM LM8UU bearings were also purchased from ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/American-Seller ... 7618555299
I am sure these items could be sourced a little cheaper if one was to search a little harder than I did but the items came in good time and packaged well.
Haven't sliced anything so far except my fingers haha
Just getting my hot end wired up, as well as the quick and dirty electronics enclosure.
BTW, how do I shorten those links?

Re: JT's H-1 build log and mods
Thanks Chris!
The issues I ran into with the 5/16" all thread was clearance between the all thread and the upgraded 608 idlers for the Y axis. If you are using the stock idlers its not an issue, but I had to run some emery cloth around the all thread to knock down the peaks on the threads so the belt didn't rub.
All in all not a big issue, and the skate bearings are a great upgrade.
The other issue was with the skate bearings was unless I narrowed the base a little ,the belt for the Z was too short to install. I wanted all the travel I could get so I left it wide and got another belt for the Z the stock one is a 200XL 155T, I got a 158T to replace it.
I also got the belt adjusters done yesterday, whoever posted pics of the hose clamp belt adjusters.THANK YOU! what a good idea, and I am working on the final wiring on the printer today as the kids are with Nana and I can focus. Too bad I don't have any filament yet.

Pssst! its back on page 2 haha. I posted the links to ebay and the bearings are LM8UU and the smooth rod is 8MM hardened linear rod from ebay also.
Still curious how to shorten the links though.
Pssst! Hey Chris I am originally from TX, just North of Midland.

That means you gotta move up here too! Chris.
Teach us all how to cook up some GOOD BBQ! Not some of the crap they call BBQ up here in southern Alaska
I will try and post some more pics of my progress today.
I am chomping at the bit to get this thing printing! I will probably have plenty of questions about slic3r when its all said and done, but everyone here is pretty helpful so I should be able to muddle through.
Michael better watch out! I am catching up!!
