I've been using the Repetier/Slic3r combo since assembling my Max V2, and have recently been experimenting with other slicers, as I felt that Slic3r's generated output was lacking in a number of areas.

Decided to give Cura 14.03 a try, and after a number of tries playing with the settings, I think I've found my new slicing software! I found the output to be considerably more robust with regards to placing support material, and it seemed to infill more accurately than Slic3r (which occasionally missed having infill connect with the edges of an object).

Going to do some more testing, but it's certainly promising. Although it's designed for other print platforms, it works admirably on the Rostock Max!

I switched to Cura a while ago and have been very happy with it. The finished quality of the prints was exceptional.

I also am impressed with Cura over Slic3r but I am close to deciding if I should purchase Simplify 3D.

can you post settings in Cura?

I'm attaching my Cura settings here - there are probably still loads more optimizations to be made, however these seem to work reasonably well right now.

This one has a fairly aggressive support angle due to a model I was working on - feel free to customize as necessary and post your updated settings!

Just another thing...once sliced in Cura, What to do with it?

Do you only have the option to load the G-Code to a Card? Can the code be loaded into Matter Control or Repetier-Host? and is there a preferred sequence to do so?

With Repetier Host you can use the Load button and load the gcode file to use it to print.
The Cura gcode can be placed on an SD card and the SD card can be placed in the printer to print via the SD card.
I do not use MatterControl but I would be shocked if it did not have a load button to load the gcode the same as Repetier host has.

I just switched the machine that was dedicated to my Rostock from a Windows 8 machine (with Slic3r built in) to an Ubuntu machine (with Cura built in). I was in the middle of printing the "Shootout" calibration prints from Make Magazine, and completely blown away by Cura's increased ability to deal with fine detail and decreased build times. I'm still very new, and there may be settings in Slic3r that could have produced similar results, but Cura, IMHO, should be default for new printers.

In my opinion Slic3r is on the bottom of a list of slicers.
My favorites are Cura, and Kisslicer.

I have completely stopped using Slic3r and doubt I will ever use it again. Both Cura and Kisslicer are leaps and bounds better in every way. I prefer Kisslicer to Cura, but have been extremely impressed with how well Cura worked with little to no tweaking.

I haven't even thought about using Slic3r in.... I don't know, well over a year. When I was finally able to make the switch to Cura I never looked back. Standalone Slic3r seems almost archaic, (no 3D interface, sorta clunky interface) and even when its paired with Repetier lately its been going down the drain as far as slice quality. I was never able to figure out KISS, it seemed less simple than its name implied.

Cura (in accordance to the Apple saying) "just works". Ive tweaked a few small settings (Z-hop, changed the support material pattern, speed) but those were mainly preference. I've yet to find something I'd rather turn to. Maybe when I get a good S3D profile...

KISS is definitely not simple like the name would imply, but once tuned it works awesome. I'm really interested in S3D (primarily for selectable support and for multi-object jobs with different slice settings for each object), but the $140 price hurts when I have a functioning slicer and a million other upgrades planned.

I recently tried Cura, and I could say that I get decent results with it. However, If I prefer the top/bottom aspect of Cura slices, I also prefer the aspect of the sides I get from slic3r.

One nice thing about Cura is the slicing speed. But I like how tweakable slic3r is compared to Cura...

I did not finish comparing both, but I am not done with slic3r yet.

Kiss, I don't know... I was never convinced. And Symplify is not free as in beer... but... I love beer.
So for now, I'll stick with Cura and Slic3r.
