Few questions before my purchase

Hi all, I'm planning on purchasing the Max V2. I've been researching a first time printer to buy for the past month, and I believe I've finally settled on learning with the Rostock Max V2. I've been seconds away from purchasing a couple of other more expensive printers, but being that I don't have much modeling experience, other than minor work in Solidworks, I thought it would be wasted on me to spend the $3K on the one that I was originally intending to buy. I figure, best to start with something a bit more affordable, where I won't kick myself if I turn out to be horrible at modeling.

In any case, had a few questions.

Are there any mods I should do from the get? Like I said, I've been researching like crazy, and I've come to realize that E3D make a fantastic all metal hotend. Is there a way to mod the V2 to use this hotend? Any way / instructions to go dual extruder?

What about magnetic ball joints? Any availability of these for the V2?

I know I have more questions, but I think my mind went blank when I started typing, so I'll have to add to this later, but would appreciate any help. :D

Hi and welcome.

For what the Max offers, it's an incredibly affordable printer - it's what attracted me to it in the first place. If you go ahead with the purachase I don't think you'll be disappointed :) It's also able to be run incredibly fast.

Bear in mind that there's the assembly - are you comfortable with that? Some find the process enjoyable (like me) but some may find it frustrating. If you like Lego, you'll love it.

As far as the e3d goes - yes it's a great hot-end, a lot of us here are using it on our machines and the process to install on the Rostock is simple. I'm using this mounting bracket designed by one of our forum members named 626pilot: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:137140 just print it out with the stock hot-end and you're good to go!
A good addon to this mounting system is this fan shroud: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:257188 - it locks nicely to the e3d neck and doesn't let the fan vibrate (which is annoying). Again one of the forum members, Cope413 put this together

Now on to dual extrusion. I have not modded mine for dual (yet), but quite a few others have and there are some decent threads which discuss this somewhere.... Now where are they?
Anyway, here's the dual e3d mount that another fine forum member, Bubbasnow put together: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:278076

A company named Trick Laser: http://tricklaser.com/ makes some magnetic ball arms for the Rostock and again some users here have swapped them out and been quite happy. I recommend just using it with the stock arms for a while - I honestly am pretty impressed with the stock accuracy and haven't felt the need to swap to anything else. I would like the ability to swap out the hot end easily though, and having magnetic arms would allow that easily.

In the end, I'm really stoked with my machine and I think you'll like yours if you go for it :)

Good luck!

McSlappy, Trick Laser does make metal ball end arms for the Rostock and Orion but they are not magnetic.

McSlappy, thank you for the reply, exactly what I'm wanting to hear! :D Very excited to have finally made a decision on a printer after so long. I have ACTUALLY lost sleep over it. I was literally pulling out my CC to purchase a $3K bot, but I was talked out of it the very last minute, and I'm a bit relieved.

I'm comfortable with the assembly. I was initially looking for a pre-built, pre-calibrated machine, but you know, I enjoy projects, and am pretty excited for one. I have severe back pain, so that was really the main reason for wanting something ready to go, but I'll just take my time, and do what I can seated. The only part I'm nervous about is assembling the hotend. I'm never good with goop! :D

But I'm sold, I'm just looking into whether to purchase from SeeMeCNC directly, or save a bit of cash and order from Filabot.

Thanks for the info on the E3D, I'll have to order that as well. I did check out tricklaser, but yeah, no magnetic ball arms as Eaglezsoar said.

Oh, oops! Well thanks for clearing that up :)

How do they hold in place if they aren't magnetic?

They are ball rod ends like you would find in an RC car or helicopter. Metal ball that 'snaps' into a rounded plastic holder. Super accurate.

Also totally agree with what McSlappy said. This printer is great and I would recommend it to anyone wanting to get into 3D printing.

Yup, I'm set an excited for it. Just have to do a quick search to see if there are any deals around. I'm pretty sure it's only being sold by SeeMeCNC directly, and Filabot, but won't hurt to look around... though, would it benefit me to purchase direct?

Yep, that's the ticket! The supplied 800mm of tubing is plenty.

Do you mean that at some future time they are going to offer the magnetic arm kits?

Brian has done a few mockups with magnetic arms, but he's always been happier with the regular heim jointed ones (this was about a year ago). I don't know if they'll be for sale or not, but it's definitely something that's gone through the trick laser dev lab.

This may fall into the "if it's nor broke, don't fix it" category since it's a slight hassle having to change/modify your effector platform and carriage mounts.

That's why I asked if you were from the United States, you already knew! Good job!

We _really_ need a sticky on this subject. Eaglesoar, thanks but this is turning out to be a weekly sometimes daily thing.

I'll link and send an email to Steve and John.. its time to collect these up and get them into a FAQ...

Yup, thanks for looking out! I just placed my order about half an hour ago for the MAX V2. I may end up purchasing the E3D directly from the UK as I want to also pick up a 0.35mm nozzle, and it doesn't seem like they're available anywhere else... I'll have to search a bit more first, maybe I'm just not using the right keywords in my search.

I think you will have to deal directly with E3D, no one else has that size nozzle.

No, you cannot use a nozzle from Seemecnc in the E3D.

Yeah, looks like they're not available elsewhere. I'm wondering if I should just hold off on the E3D. They're going to be releasing a V6 soon as well, so might be a good idea to wait for that.

Unless you have a pressing need right now, it does make sense to wait and get the latest version.

Definitely, I think that's what I'll do. I tend to have the "do all at once" attitude, but I'm in no rush, and I'll get to see how well I can get the stock hotend to print. Okay, now that that's settled, where's my printer?? It's been almost 7 hours since I've ordered!! :D

You should find that the stock hotend works well with PLA and ABS. The E3D excels in the higher temperature filaments (over 240c).
