Ran across this article today during my show prep.
Purdue University students have developed a soybean-based material that can be used for 3D printing.
Filasoy, as it’s called, is a low-energy, low-temperature, renewable and recyclable filament, and it’s made from soy, tapioca root, cornstarch, and sugar cane.

I think that we are going to see a lot of this in the future because it is renewable, and costs about the same as the present plastics based filaments.

The two chemical engineers in her group should have corrected her when she said that plastics aren't organic. Other than that, I have only a few concerns with the soy based stuff:
1) What is its tensile strength and modulus?
2) How much will it cost and how will it print?
3) Will it give my hotend a yeast infection?

I love #3, I almost fell off my chair laughing. One of your best!

With everything that can go wrong with using a new type of filament, that should be the yeast of your concerns!

Only one way to find out! Get lickin'.
Actually don't do that. I'm guessing that the filament has lots of non-biological stuff in it to make it behave like a normal plastic. Remember that the school's competition was sponsored by the soy-bean industry(??), and they're trying to play the Eco-friendly crowd with this. There is nothing Eco-friendly about any type of manufacturing and our hobbies are no exception.

That's okay, I'm not a fan of tofu anyway.
