You sure about the connector? When I put mine together I marked, checked and rechecked the LCD cable. Still it turned out that I had it plugged in upside down.
I would get beeps, but didn't get much on the LCD so it may not be the same issue as yours, but worth a check.

I had this problem, too. If you stand completely to the side of the circuit board(perpendicular to it) and look down the side at the screen - can you read any of the characters? If so, your potentiometer is turned way, way too high.

If you look at the back of the board there is a tiny potentiometer that you can adjust with a screwdriver.

If you turn it to the right 1/8-1/4" the screen should get brighter, so bright in fact, that you cannot see anything (white-out)

If you turn it the same amount to the left (1/8-1/4") and it just goes dimmer but the blocks are still there, then try turning it as far as it will go to the left.
It should go completely dark. Now, a tiny bit at a time, turn it to the right. Eventually it will be dimly readable. Now just adjust brightness to taste.

I found this when I was sitting perpendicular to my lcd panel and trying look at something across the room.

I had the same problem, so I removed the LCD screen thumbscrews and propped it up. Turned the printer on and used a tiny screwdriver to adjust the contrast pot on the back of the LCD screen. Once I turned it a few times I could start to read the two rows of dots perfectly. In my case I could see nothing and thought the screen was dead. If you need a pic of the pot I'm talking about let me know.
