ABS temperatures

Post by heathenx »

I'm just now getting around to squirting ABS through my Rostock Max v2 for the first time (I mainly use PLA). I've been printing some calibration cubes @ 225°C and 90°C on the bed. Does that seem right? What temperatures do you folks like too use. Also, it seems like the Rostock has trouble getting the bed up to 110°C. Is that possible and it is it even necessary on this printer?

the temps I use are:
abs: 225 hotend, 85 bed..
pla: 200 hotend, 60 bed..

and hairspray on the bed for both

I can't get my bed above 95C.

The temps you're posting look like they're right in the ballpark. If it's working for you then it's good!

PLA you could try taking the temperature down a touch, but it's preference too. I find at 200 I would get too much stringing on pieces with lots of retracts. Also depends on the color/make of the filament. Some take higher temps than others.

Thank-you. Since I had my temperature wrong for PLA from the get-go, I thought I'd ask about ABS this time around. I'll leave it at 225°/90°. I seem to be getting decent results. I still question the bed temperature. I usually run my bed at 110° for ABS on my other printer but it has a smaller build plate. Perhaps the Rostock's plate is too big to reach 110°. Seems like it ought to though.

The Rostock's heated build plate can definitely reach 110C, however you would be hard pressed to get that with the under powered stock PSU, I couldn't get over 85C with the hotend at 220C with the stock one, with the one I replaced it with however I can get it up to 110C.

Well, that makes sense. I didn't build my Rostock myself so I don't know what the specs are on the stock PSU. Oly gave me a new PSU a few weeks ago when I thought I had a problem but I gave it back to him and didn't really pay attention to the specs on the box. I suppose this is why it takes a very long time for the build plate to heat up, right?

Well it's partly why it takes so long to heat up the bed, with the new PSU my bed heats up noticeably faster than before, but still not a "fast" heat up, from what I've read to get really fast bed heat up times you need to use a 24V PSU with some sort of relay setup or something. One thing that does definitely help with heat up times too though is to throw a towel over the bed to hold in the heat, that's what I do with mine when I want to get it up to temp faster.

Or you could stick a plate of PEI on top, kinda sorta the same thing. I imagine if a towel was added it would work even faster.
